I was using a tiller this weekend when I went to disengage the tiller I heard a bang, then on the next attempt to engage the pto, nothing happened. More concerning is the rear PTO spins freely, it never used to do that.

Of note, the PTO engagement was always tight, difficult to both engage and to switch between locations.

Is there some sort of shear pin which may have broken, or does this sound like more serious damage? The hydro works fine, and I don't hear any strange noises when tractor is sitting or driving.

If I don't use the PTO, is there any chance for other damage?

Is it possible for a decent wrench to fix this thing (me), or should I just call the dealer and get my checkbook out?

Thanks

Steve

You don't say how old the unit is, but it might be under warranty since it comes with a 3 year coverage. I wouldn't use the tractor until you know the extent of the damage. I have no idea of how power is transfered inside the case to the PTO, but I know that if there are any broken parts floating around, it will do more damage.
