Yeah.. if you fill it to the top of the filler neck it drools about half a cup of AF on the ground when it heats up to operating temperature. After that it's fine.

Does the HST have an oil cooler setting in front of the radiator and gear does not? If so, the oil cooler would be adding more heat to the radiator (warmer air coming through the fins) so more expansion room is needed.Interesting that the L3400 DT (gear) has no recovery tank, while the HST version does... I have no idea why they are different though.

There will still be some in the water jackets. The water jackets go lower than the water pump.
