Changing Antifreeze L3400 - Capacity is short

Weird.
So the radiator cap just vents outside?

Yeah.. if you fill it to the top of the filler neck it drools about half a cup of AF on the ground when it heats up to operating temperature. After that it's fine.

Interesting that the L3400 DT (gear) has no recovery tank, while the HST version does... I have no idea why they are different though.

Sean
Does the HST have an oil cooler setting in front of the radiator and gear does not? If so, the oil cooler would be adding more heat to the radiator (warmer air coming through the fins) so more expansion room is needed.

So when it cools down it could suck air in?
What a crazy design.

That is how old tractors and cars were made. You just filled them up about half way between the tubes and the top of the radiator.

Yep, whatever it doesn't need it'll spit out the first time you get it hot.. they were tough on cats and dogs though.

The drain on our 1635 is lower than the block, so everything gets drained, cab included.

There will still be some in the water jackets. The water jackets go lower than the water pump.

Not enough to loose sleep over. That is why it gets changed yearly as per the manual.

There could be a 1/2 gallon in there plus alot of the time there is alot of sediment/trash that comes out of the block.
