I see the line wife likes it ergonomically
that sells it for me if she likes to mow likes the fit go for it
me I just bought the ccyanmar inmy avatar for the way it fits me I test drove green, red, orange, another red, and decided on the black and yellow before I shopped for pricing that was just a plus
I am a fairly big guy have a fairly new knee need a cab as it gets darned cold up here
I go with the it fits whoever is driving it then go from there
the GT factor for and extra $400. is a plus in my book

I also think it's great of the dealer to let you try the Cub out on your property. I am not sure why the JD dealer will not allow this. It just seems silly to me to buy the JD and then if you don't like it you can return it policy.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys were right to point out that I was comparing apples to oranges. After we test the Cub on our lawn we will have a much better idea of how well it does that job. I too would rather error on the side of buying a little more tractor than I can possibly get by with for something more substantial that will last me for the long run. But you are correct lawn mowing is what I need this tractor for, not ground work, so we will see how well it cuts and put all the considerations in the mix. Thanks again for your input. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to respond.

We decided on the Cub. It may be a bit more machine than we need for just mowing the lawn, but the overall construction, feel, fit and (my wife just fell in love with it). Plus our dealer gave us a very good price and I have had good luck with service on all my Kioti equipment. Thanks for all the feedback and advice.

I test drove the JD300 and the Cub Cadet GT2542. After many hours of mulling the purchase over, I decided on the Cub. The price was 8 dollars more, (big deal), but I felt the Cub had more to offer. I have a little over and acre of meadow type terrain with small hills and my Husqvarna bit the dust trying to handle the work. That's all I needed to see was the fact that a belt drive failed to do the job. So-I went with the shaft drive of the Cub. In driving the JD, the reverse action, of the pushing on the pedal, seemed to cause the tractor to jerk harshly. The Cub is louder but feels more powerful, even though the HP's are about the same. I plan on taking down some Ash trees this fall and don't want anyones big 4whl drive pickup going over my lawn. So the Cub will be trailering the wood out to their trucks. One of my other first winter plans with the Cub is a snow blade, and if there's too much snow I have a large walk behind snow blower-but I thought the plow would be good up to 6 or 7 inces.....

Hi Diesel_nut, I have an 1882 and love the heck out of it. How would you compare the 2554 to the 1872(82)? I know that the 72 and 82 are super garden tractors but are they really similar to the 54? Thanks.:)

I'm pretty pleased with my 2518 that I've had since May. This is the same as the 2544 except mine has the old style hood. I was looking at those two also before I found mine used. The Deere looked better from a fit and finish standpoint. The Cub Cadet has a stronger drivetrain. I really like a horizontal shaft engine in a mower.

I was bugged by all the negative reviews I see on Cubs. Sounds like someone just isn't trying really hard in the QC department. Then again, most people will only post a review when they are frustrated with something. Maybe there are just more Cubs out there. I did notice that a lot of Cub LT owners were posting reviews under model numbers of Cub GT's.

Anyway, mine has to go, just picked up a Kubota g1900 and I've got no use for them both.
