My understanding is that they seem themselves in the glass.

Sometimes. Every spring we have Cardinals, Mockingbirds and Blue Jays attacking windows in the house. They see their reflection and attack in order to protect their territory. The rest of the year we get the occasional bird that flies into the windows at full speed. They either stun themselves or break their necks. Makes a helluva noise when they smack into it.

My neighbor has wild turkeys coming up onto his back porch and attacking their reflection in his patio window. He just had a new patio door installed this last year and they have already destroyed his screen by trying to peck their reflection through it. To make things worse, they seem to also leave a lot of "prizes" right in front of his door.

At the price of fertilizer, maybe it is not so bad?
