Thought a thread devoted to electric off-road EV for work or recreation on the homestead would be useful. I had put this together previously but lost it to a crash, so here is my research on whats available recreated. Our main reason for leaning towards EV is mainly for the quiet operation. Range is not a big concern for our selection and I have attempted to make a list of what I have found. My thinking is EVs for the farm kind of sort out into general categories; UTV, Dune Buggy and Golf Cart with some overlap between categories and a range of utility. Prices where available may be high or low and likely not reflect cost of a lot of accessories.

Here is my list in no particular order except for the ones we are seriously considering (as of today) are in the top three or four. Interested in anyones observations on whats available and any specific suggestions. Thanks.

I'd be interested in what you pick.
My worry would be I would run it out of "power" at a remote end of my property, have to walk back, then have to tow it back. I hope they can be towed.

I have run my Kawasaki Mule out of gas (gas gauge is under passenger seat), several times.

Also the first few years we owned our hunting property it did not have any electric for charging.

I bought a used E-Gator from a City Parks Dept. Fixed it up nice. It is my most used and probably in the top running for most loved piece of equipment. Despite having a "noisy" diesel mule.

WARNING, though. Parts prices are so high as not to be believed! I bought a wrecked $500.00 CDN, machine for spares. Already, saved me thousands!

Not just quiet, hear birds singing as you drive! But the effortless stop and go operation is what makes it so handy. Do idling, or restarts just to go ahead a few feet. Did I say I love it?

Not fast, poor performance in any mud or snow, and smaller battery option does not allow very long run times. Would be no good for children. Cold weather has a very profound effect on the lead acid batteries for run time. But then, it's pretty much parked all winter. But suits me perfectly if charged every night of a good days use.

I particularly love the simple, utilitarian, no-non-sense appearance. If there was some 4wd, electric vehicle stictly along utilitarian design, that would interest me, but I have not seen one.

One thing to note about the old Legacy Gators. They have no supension in the back relying on the low pressue high floatation tires.

I just put 15 pounds of air in my E-Gator, as suggested by a dealer, and will have to back that down as everything in the bed is airborn when hitting a bump.

My personal thoughts for battery operated cars etc. is totally negative!
We are not building any more power plants in the U.S. and power demand for electricity still continues to rise,
so will a time come for allocating charge time to be devoted to charge vehicle, charge computer, charge smart phone and whatever.
After the electric "Hybrid" car batteries go dead, a new fee for disposal (as for tires, oil changes).
AND do we create a new waste dump for these batteries????????
Here is a pic of my first cordless drill still running today.

My father recently bought a used electric golf cart. It is 48 volt with lift kit, roof, camo kit, and 4x4 conversion kit. He is currently having new batteries installed. After the new batteries he will have $2600 in it. It is quite which makes it perfect for hunting or to ride around the property while having a conversation. We have several ATVs at the property and the golf cart is by far the most used. It does well on steep hills and in the mud. It has a gauge so little danger of getting stranded by running out of juice. The rear seat folds to make a handy bed.

Dad is getting older so it is the perfect vehicle for him.

From just last September...

US to open nearly 200 power plants

Utilities and energy companies are continuing to invest heavily in ... natural gas. An exclusive analysis by USA TODAY finds that across the United States there are as many as 177 natural gas power plants currently planned, under construction or announced. There are close to 2,000 now in service.
