I always hated filling the gas tank on our Ferris mower as in order to get it to the full mark you had to fill slowly once it got up to the bottom of the filler neck which extended down into the tank a bit. Always spilled fuel as it reached the bottom of the filler neck and no way for air to escape.
My solution was to remove the fuel cap and stuff a rag in the filler neck about 2 inches from the top then drill a 1/4 inch hole in the inside of the filler neck about an inch from the top. There is a void behind the filler neck where more fuel can go if the air can escape. The tank is plastic so the rag catches the plastic shavings and you just pull it up with the shavings or you could suck them up with a shop vac.
Now when I fill the tank the air is allowed to escape and the fuel tank reads full and way less spilling, I am sure there are other mowers with similar tank designs.
