We used to burn 8 or so cord a year in a very cold climate and, despite all of my paper calculations on stacking tightness or "fit", species, wood humidity and weather, there was always a 1 to2 cord margin of error. I never could get it right because of the variables so I just built a shed that held a couple cords of nicely split and fitted wood and no matter what happened I was good to go. I either had a great start to the next year or a pleasant finish to the current winter.
