just got a ford 4500 diesel backhoe. wanting to change oil to start i don't know what oil they were running in it. i believe it may have been regular 10-40w conventional oil. should i stick to that or should i put in something like shell rotella or mobile delvac?

Being that it is very old, anything above 30wt is spoiling it. A good quality hyd/trans oil is fine for everything else

then should i just use 10-30w regular oil in it . tractor is in good shape for it's age dosen't use any oil.

Yes, that is fine.

By the way, welcome to TBN!
Have fun with your 4500. Make sure you grease the hydraulic pump driveshaft under the radiator and the 2 zerks for the steering mechanism

Not quite. It must be a diesel rated oil, not just any oil. ;>)
