California, I also am interested in the Lister engines, I know there has to be one hiding in a barn around here, can't afford to buy the ones I am seeing on Craigslist. I need backup power, and they make great a great power source.

Great info here, many thanks to all. While repairing my scrapyard Chinese diesel genset
I found a parts supplier near Atlanta. He sells gensets on these sites ezapu.com, dieselgeneratorsonline.net, and has a fleabay store dieselgeneratorparts to sell parts. I've ordered an injector pump and fuel tank and am very pleased with the parts and service, very fast shipping. Talked with him and he was very helpful. Hope this helps!

ASCI- Thanks for the links..I've been looking for head bolt torque and valve clearance specs for awhile. Found them on the Diesel Generator Diesel Generators Standby Diesel Generators site you referenced.
Completed some repair on my 6kW "silent" diesel today, the studs for the exhaust pipe to head connection had both backed out.
While in there I also discovered a bunch of mouse damage, their urine sure rusts stuff up bad :(
Torqued the head bolts and found the valves way loose, set them to the middle of spec.
Runs great and much quieter now that the exhaust is actually connected to the head!

No valve stem seals was one of the issues that I found whilst tearing down my 186F(SE). Judging from the fact that the bore was very polished, yet still measures at factory spec, my guess is that it was not honed to ensure proper lubrication of the piston rings when first assembled either. As it has negligible compression at the moment, I think the rings are shot and have ordered a new piston, gudgeon, rings, con rod and big end bearing for starters and may end up replacing more as the project continues.
I will try and post some photos of the single bolt rocker shaft mount, bore and other issues that I discover as I go, but I will be rebuilding the thing to last a lot longer than 300 hours.

David,
Where did the 300 hours come from? Is that when you started having problems? I'm fixing to ORDER one....(Aurora) and sure hope it goes a long time........

The 300 hours was from first start to rebuild required (no start due to low compression). From what I have read, this particular engine appears to have been a dud as many others seem to do thousands of hours without an issue. Trouble began when the first single rocker shaft mounting bolt sheared off and it has been one repair after another ever since. I thought about just buying a new engine, but the quality control on these things seems non-existent, so I decided to rebuild it myself (at least that way I know about any potential issues and can assume responsibility for the quality myself). Sourcing parts has been a nightmare - plenty of vendors in China are willing to supply them, but want a minimum order of 500 pieces, so bearings and seals have been sourced from a local bearing specialist, piston, conrod & rings from Singapore, crankcase gasket from the UK, valve stem seals from Australia via England & Germany.....

I have now been running my chinese generator for more than 300 hours after the initial problems were fixed. Yesterday I notised that the tension dropped from about 230 volt to about 170-180 volt. The DC also dropped from 12 to 9 volt. The frequency was still 50 Hz (European standard) indicating that the engine was running normally (3000 RPM). The alternator has a capacitor regulating the voltage. Could a faulty capacitor explain this?
Have you any suggestions on how to proceed and how to check the capacitor? I have not been able to find any thread on this. Please redirect me if there further information on this forum or elsewhere!

Anders,

Have a look at the manuals on this site 186F Diesels there is an alternator troubleshooting section in the Diesel Generator troubleshooting download.

Thanks for the information David!
I will dismantle the alternator and troubleshoot it with the help of this manual.
