1998 CKC TS 254 (Fei Dong 295T1)
Right behind the High Low gear shifter there is this part that has finally crapped out and without it functional u have to jump the tractor from the starter..
Two wires that connect to it, I tied together to simulate a closed switch- to no avail- I still have to jump it at the starter.

Is this a Chinese specific part that I can't find anywhere else or well.. What's it called?

Correction after re-reading the post it is more likely a neutral safety switch...?

It's some kind of switch? I'm not sure about temperature but it senses whether the tractor is in neutral to enable the starter..

Think you nailed it. Thanks !

Now I wonder if it can be fixed (saw tiny bit of smoke from it when it failed)

Generic name is probably 2 wire inductive barrel proximity switch. Lots of companies make many various kinds. You would have to know voltage rating (probably 12VDC), thread size, sensor range, etc...

in theory, bypassing the switch by connecting the two wires that attach to the terminals on the switch should work
...or not.? its not working for me although it helps to identify the prob..
