Jack,
I looked at the 790 very closely when I was shopping. The big turning point for me to go orange was when I compared the hydraulics and the 3pt. lift capacity to the smaller Kubota B7500. It had more capacity, came with HST and was cheaper. I bought my B7500 before the B7800 came out. The 790 is a rock solid tractor for it's intended use, but for me I am really glad I got the HST and I actually wish I had more 3pt lift. If memory serves... the 790 has a little over 800lbs, B7500 has 1036 and the B7800 has around 1300. That's quite a difference. Like the other posts have said, everybody's needs are different, but you asked for some opinions and that's my 2 cents.
