are the AW 32 oils offered by sams club okay for older hydraulic systems?
thanks

Depends on what the original oil specs are for your piece of equipment.

Some hydraulic systems use motor oil, not thinner hydraulic fluid.

AW stands for anti-wear but also indicates an industrial oil with a demulsify property. This type of oil will allow water to settle out so it can be drained from the bottom of the tank. Thus can be a problem in mobile equipment because if the water is not drained off frequently, it can go through the hydraulic system as a slug and one spurt of water can severely damage the Pistons on hydrostatic pumps and motors. Instead mobile equipment hydraulic oils - many trade names - emulsify water do it stays in suspension. A small amount of water in the system widely dispersed will not harm the components while a slug of almost pure water will destroy.

We found that swinging the car body of a hydraulic excavator, filled with AW hydraulic oil and left to sit overnight, has resulted in the pool of water that settles out to enter the pump intake and begin destruction.

However this is not accepted by all manufacturers but if you go to Caterpillar's web site and look up Hydo Advanced 10, you will see their explanation. If you look at Mobil's website and search for DTE 20, you will see AW oils that demulsify. If you look at Mobil's website for Mobilfluid 424, you will not see ability to separate water mentioned. I'm not sure why they do not state that this oil will emulsify water but that is one of its abilities.

If there is little chance of condensation in your system the AW32 will likely not cause a problem. AW32 is ISO 32 viscosity grade and is approximately equivalent to SAE 10. The universal hydraulic fluids commonly found at farm supply stores are closer to 10W-30.
