Travis, I'd give it about a 99.5% chance of being the alternator. Again, that's assuming you don't have a separate, malfunctioning voltage regulator, which I don't think is likely.

Slap a new alternator in there, re-do the voltage test with a fully-charged battery with the engine running, and I bet it'll be putting out around 14.5-15 volts and your troubles will be over.

Where do I get a new alternator at? Does it have to come from Mahindra or can I go to NAPA? Also, about how much do they cost?

Thanks a lot,
Travis

Travis -

A dealer could obviously provide you with one, but it might be pricey. An auto parts place might be able to get the correct one (and they might not), and you might save a few bucks (and you might not). But when it comes to electrical components like starters and alternators, I think your best bet is to find a local shop that specializes in just that.

I have a father and son auto electric shop just down the street from me, and they're great. A specialty shop has many advantages.

<ul type="square"> There's a good chance they'll have just what you need right on the shelf. (I doubt that you have a "Mahindra" brand alternator; it just might be a fairly common alternator.

If they don't have one in stock, there's a good chance that they can rebuild yours, often very quickly, and often better than a rebuilt one that you'd get elsewhere. They've rebuilt starters and alternators for me while I waited (heck, they even let me WATCH!), they use high-quality components, and they bench-test everything before it goes out the door.

For about the same price, they might be able to provide you with a more powerful alternator than your present one, if you desire more juice for lights, a/c, or that beer cooler you've been dreaming about. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you find the right place, they might let you return the alternator in the off-chance that the problem is elsewhere (although at 1,000 hours-plus I kinda doubt it). My guys are incredible - sometimes one of my trucks or machines is on the fritz and they'll say "here, take an alternator, a starter, a voltage regulator (if applicable) and a fresh battery, and bring back what you don't need".

And lastly - their prices are about 30% lower than my local NAPA, who are also great guys - just not auto electric specialists. [/list]

So dig out the yellow pages and look under "Auto Electric Service". There are 20 listings under that heading in the Hartford [CT] phone book; here's hoping there are some around you too.

Good luck! John
