J.D. 212 lawn tractor stuck in gear

Might try removing the gear shifter to see if it is worn, thus causing two gears to be locked together.
Look at this parts list to get more familiar with what you are needing to look at in the tranny. May end up splitting the transmission case to solve the problem.

What conditions led up to the stuck gears? You, or someone else operating at the time?

Going from memory there are three or four bolts that hold the shift lever cover assembly to the top of the transaxel. Take this cover off and then carefully pry the shift rails so the slots all line up. This will put tranny in neutral. The end of the shifter is probably worn enough that it can slip from on shift fork to other with out first one being fully in neutral,

The detent springs were also prone to failing on these trannies. You have to split the transaxle to replace them though

Can also look at the subsequent "pages" in the parts schematics that show the transmission case as well as the transmission gears and shifter forks, etc.
