Hi,

I'm new to these forums, been a watcher for some time, this is my first post.

I purchased a new JD 5065E this summer, and I went with the 16.9-28 R-1 tire size option on the rear tires. Winter is coming, and I'll need to chain this thing up once snow falls.

Here's the question: Has anyone else here chained one of these tractors up? The fender clearance between the tire and the fender is pretty tight with the 16.9's on it, and I'm concerned it isn't enough to allow for chains.

If you've chained yours up, what style chain did you use? I'd like to use an H pattern chain so that the cross links don't fall down between the lugs on the R-1's, but I'd hate to order a set of chains and not have enough clearance for them without destroying the fenders.

Yes, I do need chains... our property is on a fairly steep grade ( I live in the N. Idaho panhandle) and when our driveway gets a bit icy, I need all the traction advantage I can get.

Any advice or help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Just to clarify, I'm not addressing the inside fender to tire clearance, I've set the tires out to nearly their widest stance for stability on our hillside and compound contour terrain, so the inside dimension isn't an issue.

The close tolerance that I'm speaking of is between the top of the tire tread-face and the bottom of the fender... I have slightly less than two inches clearance at this point!

Any input would be appreciated.

I realize my tires are smaller (12-26) R4's, but I also have about 2" of clearance and I haven't had any trouble hitting the fenders. Just keep the chains as tight as possible - maybe use heavey duty tighteners, if needed, I don't use any. I use 2 link ladders with vbars on the back and regular 2 link ladders on the front because of the 12 degree hill by my house. I got mine from tirechains.com in Pa.

I have R4's and bought the most aggressive studded chains that I could find. Recommended minimum clearance between the tire and fender per the dealer was 2". It is tight but does work very well. Chain has to be snug and everything tucked and safety wired. Try these folks:Tire Chains by TireChains.com. Or these guys: Buy Tire Chains from the Traction Specialistsゥ. You can call these folks and and find out anything you want to know about tire chains. They are a significant investment and the call well worthwhile. These are Aquiline Talons. Not for an asphalt or concrete driveway.

I have 3 1/4" from the inside of the fender to tire clearance. 2" would be tight. I would call the chain dealer for advice. Shipping on chains is very expensive and the charge is the same both ways.
