I am looking at a JD 790 4wd. I feel good about the size and quality of the machine. My concern is the 3 point hitch lift capacity of 815 lbs. Is this going to be OK for a 5 ft. bush hog and 5 ft. mower? If I understand correctly the further back the weight (beyond 24 inch rated) the lower the capacity. Any comments?

John,
I have a 5' Woods rear finish mower and it weighs in at about 600 lbs. I have a New Holland TC18 with a 3 pt. lift capactiy of 1265 lbs. at 24" behind the 3 pt., are you sure the 790 which I believe is about a 30 hp. unit is only 815 lbs.? Mine is only 18.5 hp. I do know when I was shopping, the TC was beefier in the 3 pt. than other tractors in its class. I do have to add weight to the front to keep it down with this mower on the back. Good Luck, JimBinMI

I think there was a long thread on 3ph ratings here (maybe CTB). An archive search probably will find a lot of information.

Yes, the JD 790 is a 30hp tractor with 815 lbs. capacity of 3 PH at 24 inch. The tractor weighs 2100 lbs. this may be the cause of the lighter 3 PH ability. Do I need more than 815 lbs.??? Thanks, John.

John,

My TC18 only weighs in at about 1438 lbs., so it is rated to lift close to its own weight at 24" behind the 3 pt. (rated at 1265 lbs.)

I could be wrong, but I look at the 3 pt. rating as one of the strengths of the rear end/tractor. As to whether or not you need a tractor rated above 815 lbs., I'm not sure?

Maybe some others can chime in and tell you how big an implement 30 hp will operate and how much some of them weigh.

Good Luck, JimBinMI
