I am considering purchasing a JD 870 w/loader. It's a 1990 model with 420 hrs and seems to be in great shape. It comes with turf and AG tires. The price is $13,000...can anybody tell me if this is a good deal???

Andy, don't know how good a deal this 870 is at $13000 but I bought my 970 with 440 loader new in 94 for $14000. I know that the 870, 970 and 1070 models hold their value very well. I have no complaints on my 970, absouletly nothing has gone wrong with my tractor in the six years that I have had it. The 70 series were 100% Yanmar built tractors. I don't know who builds their 4000 series tractors.

Good luck,
george

Andy, I just bought a used "1998" 870 MFWD/Syncro trans with turf tires and 440 loader with 60" HD blade/rear rock box (ballast) with 105 hours on it 3 weeks ago.

Machine was located in Chester, NJ and loader/rock box appeared to have seen no use...mint paint on bucket and original shipping labels still clean on inside of bucket!...Owner (commercial farm stand) claimed machine had only been used as 'estate mower' to mow with a 3ph JD mower (not included)...I believe it, as machine is very clean...and seems to have had more wear on the loader in 7 hours of use by me than in the 100+ hours by original owner.

Guy wanted $17,000, I offered $13,000 and we closed deal at $15,000 with flatbed delivery included the next day...

Your price of $13,000 sounds ok if machine in good condition, not sure of what value turf & Ag tires are but I believe a set of either is worth at lease $500, it seems it would take hours to do the swap between the 2 sets of tires..I had/have a 970 MFWD TLB whcih was bought used with 150 hours in 1992 for around $15,000...now has 560 hours and ZERO problems...busted hose here or there, nothing else...I hate to give the 970 up, but it belongs to my mother and it is my brother's turn to get it for a few years and I still have much work to do around property!...

The 870 is same size as 970, but has distinctly different engine tone/horsepower than the 970 (3 cyl VS 4 Cyl)...Also, front axle design a bit different...It does move a full bucket of dirt/fill with ease and d/n seem under powered for the task.

I almost went for a 4300/4400, but had such good history with the JD970 that when I saw the 870 mint I just had to have it!...also saved about $5000 over buying a 4300, enough to buy a new woods 7500 Backhoe...The JD 8x Backhoe no longer available for this machine, but the woods looks like a solid unit and is readily available for about $5,000.

Have added a rear aux hydro kit to the 870 ($220) self installed and will be getting delivery of JD green woods 7500 subframe Backhoe tomorrow for around $5,500...

Bottom line is if the 870 looks good and will meet your needs based on its size, offer $11,000 to $12,000 and see how it goes...depends a bit on dumb luck and geography, supply & demand, etc....good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Don't know if this will help but a couple of weeks ago I bought a new JD990 MFWD with R-4 tires and had them loaded for $16,000 so far the tractor has done well. You might check out the 90 series tractors at your dealer.BILL

Thanks for all the replies...I ended up offering $12,000 and after 4 days of thinking about it, the seller finally accepted. I had it delivered the next day. Here are more details, 1991 model JD870 w/80 loader, 4WD, Synchshift Trans, 420 hrs, excellent condition. Tractor came with turf tires but seller threw in almost new set of AG tires/wheels. Also threw in 5ft rake for ballast.
