Hi all.

I am trying to disassemble the steering cylinder on my 1640 to replace the seals.

I'm trying to do this on the tractor but I cannot figure how to remove the cap.
It's a single ended cylinder with big ball joint at one end, then an eye to connect to the steering arm.

I've read reference to an internal snap ring that must be removed before the cap can be unscrewed, and I think I have found it through a hole in the outer diameter of the cap. How do you go about moving it to where it needs to go, and where does it need moving to?

Many thanks,
Michael.

Without a 1640 tech manual to consult I'll guess one must remove setscrew(key 3) to remove guide(key 7) so one can R&R piston seals.

Hi Jim.

Thanks for that diagram.
I have not noticed a set screw on mine, but I'll have a scrape around in the paint tomorrow in case it's hidden beneath.
I found a video last night showing how to remove those concealed retaining rings, but I have not been able to turn the cap to assist in its release. The presence of a set screw would explain why this is.
