My 4720 cab tractor with 400CX FEL, 485 backhoe and 673 tiller will be delivered around Thanksgiving. I want a thumb on the BH however the $1000 the dealer wants seems high compared to after-market brands like Bro-Tek.

Is the JD thumb really worth $1000?

Thumb recommendations?

I haven't priced one recently on the JD configurator... but, IIRC the list was around $850 or so.

The dealer wants another $150 for beer and pizza for his shop crew?

I think the price is probably pretty close, considering the hydraulics, controls, thumb and installation (not sure if it requires welding or a simple pin). You can always bargain with your dealer to a little lower price.

Hydraulic thumb on the 485 hoe..? I haven't been keeping up with everything here on TBN, but I thought it was a 3 position mechanical (fixed position) thumb.

News to me..

I could be wrong, but maybe I was thrown off by the title itself since it mentioned thumb for the 400CX which would be the loader and should make that grapple. If the thumb for the BH is indeed mechanical, the $1k is way too high.

OOPS! Pardon my goof.

The title should read "John Deere Mechanical Thumb for 485 Backhoe Worth $1000 Installed? Pardon my goof.

The dealer says retail is $895 plus $150 for installation = $1045.

If I go for an after-market / non-JD thumb, will my warranty be at risk?

Generally, when buying a new tractor you can expect some discount from list prices.

ESPECIALLY; if you're buying a "package deal" that involves a number of attachments as well as the tractor. A new cab tractor with loader and hoe is a fair amount to lay on the table!

IMO - your dealer ain't cuttin' you any slack on the thumb. You know what they say about sittin' on your thumb... maybe that's where your dealer has his?? :D
