Buying Advice Just bought a 1989 Yanmar 169D

I don’t think a 16hp Yanmar can handle a 5’ mower. Even a 4’ seems like it’s pushing it but I think it would work with a little care.

Yanmar paired the YM147D, Yanmar with the YQM48A 48" mower. The YM147D has 10.8 HP at the PTO according to Tractordata.

Also, Yanmar paired the YM155D with the YQM48 48" mower and the YM155D has 15 HP. Tractordata doesn't show the PTO horsepower for the YM155D. TractorData.com Yanmar YM155 tractor information

Both of those tractors are smaller than the YM169D, so it seems that the YM169D could indeed handle a 48" mower. According to Tractordata the Yanmar YM169D has 16 HP at the PTO. That likely isn't correct but it's what they claim. Guessing, if one deducts 3HP for the real number PTO horsepower, it ends up 13 HP at the PTO, 2 HP more than the YM147D and 1 HP more than the YM155D.

Uh no.

It shows a YM186D that has PowerShift, and the orange lever on the left is the shift lever.

YM169D has a 3 speed manual transmission. (Both those tractors also have a range selector sending different gearing into these transmissions).

shows where I stalled mowing upill with the YM186D in tall grass and 4 ft mower. That mower loads that tractor so hard that it feels like it is working hard under most conditions. And its powershift helps a lot, I often gear down while moving if the going gets difficult. A manual transmission can't do that, it would have to start from a standstill spinning up the stalled mower and turning the wheels at the same time, to get moving. This was sometimes difficult with the YM240, YM169D would be worse.

In conclusion a 4 ft mower will work that tractor hard but its manageable in short grass. Tall stuff will need small passes, maybe 1/3 the width of the mower.

Not disagreeing with you or the op just pointing out that the photo and captions indicate it is a 169!

Having had a 169d about 10 years ago you'll definitely struggle with a 5ft mower. Mine came with a 40" mower and even that was a load in thick grass. Id put a cap at a 48" mower for sure. Aside from that they area a solid tractor, mine I'm sure had 3000+ hours on it and always ran like a top. I actually purchased the full manual from Hoye tractor for it and sent the info in to tractor data so all of their specs are directly out of the manual.

Tractors are new to me. We just bought 6 acre field and it is too much my Cub Cadet 2518 (2WD 20HP Kohler w 48" deck). Some CC repair part shipment delays this June let the grass get ahead of me so now I need a bush hog to make it mow-able again.

I'm hoping the 169D will do the job with a 5' bush hog and a 5' tow mower. The high torque 3 cyl. diesel should help??? but I'm keen to gain advice from this forum. The land has a gentle hill.

Tractor Overview:

  • Everything functions.
  • ROP was sawed to be modified to fit in garage. The seller has metal to modify it for pins. I'll have to deal with it.
  • The tractor has cracked tires so I'll probably have to get a new set.
  • Some weeping from the rad so I am guessing a re-core or a replacement.
  • I forgot to bring a volt meter and the seller had to use a charger so the alternator, vreg, or battery may need attention.
  • No fluid leaks. A bit damp around the front left axle seal.
  • It looks a bit banged up on the hood and is missing the small side panels.

Are you still tooling around with the Yanmar and the mower?
