Over here its very common with these hooks. As far as I found you guys are not using these in the US..!? Well allmost every trailer here are constructed to be used by this hook. And I just bought my "forest-crane-trailer" (I will post pics when it comes) so I really needed this hook.

That looks very interesting....
It looks to be a selflifting, pintle type hitch...

Is the receiver on the trailer tongue a large steel ring?

Yes you are right the trailer tonque is a large ring. You lift the 3p to the top, pull a handle to release the hitch hook then you lower the 3p and the hitch hook lowers aswell, you back up in to the trailer when you stand right in position you lift the 3p all up to lock the hitch hook.
When you not have any trailer coupled you have the hitch locked in top position and use your 3p as normal.

Dromone style pickup hitches tend to only be on imported tractors here. Very rare.

Hmm, krona to dollar today...around 1800 dollar inc tax.
