I usually employ the "Zamboni" pattern, as illustrated by smstonypoint, towing a 7-foot rotary cutter and making wide turns at the ends. With a "pull" type cutter attached to the draw bar, tight turns are not an option. I often begin by making one or two passes around the perimeter of the field to clear those borders. I'm not sure if this is the most efficient cutting pattern, but it feels right.

Also, because I'm driving an open station tractor, I typically try to align my direction of travel based on the direction of the wind. By working "across" the wind, I can minimize the amount of dust and debris that I have to eat. I've found that mowing with a tail wind usually makes me wish that I had a cab (or a space suit!) It's usually too hot here to wear goggles, and dust masks don't play well with my eyeglasses.
