I am currently restoring a 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 tractor that is fitted with a Perkins 3.152 Indirect injected diesel engine.

Whilst the tractor is split, I decided to remove the hydraulic pump to inspect and replace any worn components.

Once fully disassembled, there is noticeable wear on the pump pistons and valve bodies. The scoring hangs a fingernail, so I am inclined to replace the Pistons and valve bodies whilst the tractor is apart.

The dilemma is that the pistons that are fitted look like TE20 items with 3 grooves and no piston rings.

However, the valve bodies look like the later MF35 type.

The kit I can purchase comes with new pistons and valve bodies. Will these later type pistons and bodies run on the existing pump camshaft?

It looks like 3 different pumps were used on the MF 35. A version of the hydraulic pump (184473M92) had the strainer and pistons without rings. 184473M92 was used PRIOR TO TRACTOR SERIAL NOS. (GAS) 230456 (DIESEL) 231715). This seems to be the pump you are describing.

Yes the later piston (190799M1) and rings (892604M1) are the replacement parts. The same valve chamber (184471M1) is used on all 3 pumps.

The pistons do not directly contact the camshaft: the front & rear camshaft blocks (180924M1, 180925M1) fit inside the pistons and contact the camshaft. As long as you at it, consider replacing the camshaft blocks.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your informative reply - much appreciated!

I've ordered a major repair kit that includes the later pistons and rings. I'll post my results once I get it together again.
