Want to use a good synthetic oil in my tractor for the winter at least. I thought I would go with Mobil1, since it seems to regarded as a good oil.

Can't find the 15-40 locally. I'm sure I can order it from the auto parts store, and pay a lot for it. I have tried on line and can't find this weight.

Anyone have a link to purchase the Mobil1 15 - 40 Diesel rated oil? Would appreciate it.

Given you are in Maine, I would stay away from a 15wx40 oil and go with a 0wx40 or 5wx40. I use the Shell 5wx40 oil partly for cold weather starts and I can tell that the tractor and truck likes it mucho better than 15wx40.

I THINK there is a Mobil 0w40 oil. John Deere also sells a really good 0wx40 synthetic oil. They actually state if you use their filters on their engines with the JD oil you can go 50% more hours between changes. Its an expensive oil just like Mobil 1 synthetics so I don't use it. Shell works for me.

I have been doing UOA(used oil analysis) on the 5wx40 Shell oil for years now in the truck and have a good base line. I started the tractor on the same oil later than the truck for some reason. Anyway people pick on the Shell synthetic but for me it provides good price for the performance. Since the UOA looks real good with the oil I don't see the point in spending more money on another oil. The UOA says I'm wasting money as it is changing the Shell oil at 7500-8000 miles vs 5000 per the manual. The lab says go to 10000 miles. Maybe one day I'll be brave to do so. :D

I get the Shell at Wally World.

Check you local tractor dealers they may have a good synthetic. The JD oil, I don't remember the price, was expensive but it was no more so than other high high end synthetic oils. If *** I *** was going to spend that much money on oil I would buy JD oil long before other brands. I don't know of anyone else that actually states you can run long with their oil.

I also buy the oil, air, fuel filter for my FORD, :D this still cracks me up, from my JD dealer. They are made by Fleetguard and are just like the OEM products I have bought. The price is the same. They don't sell for Chevy when I checked a few months ago. My dealer has the filters in stock and can get them to me quicker then me having to go to a couple different auto stores to get what I need.

Later,
Dan

Mobil Delvac 1, which is fully synthetic, comes in 5-40. But, I don't see it at Wally World either, although they carry the standard Delvacs and Rotellas.

Thanks guys. I did look at the JD Syn. It was a blend, not a true syn. and cost $120 for a 5 gal. bucket, and...it was not available in 15-40.

I ran shell 15-40 last winter and all was fine. I was going to go with 5-40 but after discussing it with a factory tech. I decided to go with 15 - 40 syn. this time. I will be logging and even though I will use it all winter, I don't think I will put on enough hours over the winter to warrant changing oil in the spring, so this oil will be ok for warmer weather as well.

I found it at NAPA in Hampden. I am sure any NAPA up here can get it for you.

Good luck.

I don't understand why you have to have 15W-40 when 5W-40 is available, they are the same viscosity at operating temperature. The 5W is better all year round.

Mobil 1 does not make a 15W-40 only 5W-40. I don't think you are going to find any synthetic 15W-40 at least I have not seen any.

The spread between the two numbers is one of the advantages to synthetic oil.

GaryE: Thanks.

Marcussen: I don't "have" to use anything. I "want"... to use 15-40. I do not pretend to be a mechanic, or an oil guy. I did some research and determined that this is what I "want".

Certainly, 15-40 syn. is available in at least two brands, and for all I know, many brands.

I do appreciate your response.

if you go to a NAPA store as GaryE said you can get mobil 1 but you can also
get the best keep secret, NAPA full syn Part # 75 500

AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil (AME) is good stuff.

But in Maine I feel you should look at Amsoil Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD).
It will flow better in cold weather than a 15W-40 oil and offer better protection on startup.

Here are the specs on:

AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD)
Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 11.5

Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 64.6

Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270) 174

Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity @ -25°C, cP (ASTM D 2602) 5086

Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 97) -50 (-58)

Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 92) 228 (442)

Noack Volatility (DIN 51581) 250°C for 1 hour, % weight loss 6.9

High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity, cP, 150°C, 1.0 x 106 s-1 (ASTM D-4683) 3.5

Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172: 40kgf, 150°C, 1800 rpm, 1 hr) Scar diameter, mm 0.38

Total Base Number 12.2

If you have your mind set on a 15W-40 synthetic oil here are the specs on:

AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil (AME)

Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 14.4

Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 89.7

Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270) 167

CCS Viscosity @ -20°C, cP (ASTM D-2602) 4477

Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-97) -42 (-44)

Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-92) 234 (453)

Four Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172B: 40 kg, 75°C, 1200 rpm, 1 hour), Scar, mm 0.35

Noack Volatility, % weight loss (g/100g) (ASTM D-5800) 6.8

High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity
(ASTM D-4683 @ 150°C, 1.0 X 106 s.-1, cP 4.4

Total Base Number 12.1
