I am re-working my father-in-law's old JD disc that I recently acquired, but don't know the exact model. I found a JD KBA 12' (1st attached pic) on the internet that is real similar, but this one is a 14'. I am pretty sure that many of the KB, KC, KBA, KBL, and KBY parts are interchangeable, but I still want to know model of this disc. I couldn't make out any model # on the disc. Any suggestions?

It is also similar to RW and RWA models.

The pic looks like a RW to me. I have a lot of Used parts for the RW series. Ken Sweet

Where would I look for a model? On the tongue? What is the purpose of the chain a pulley near the rear? I thought it was to aid in lifting the back of the disc, but when lifted the chain is not much tighter than when disc blades are on the ground.

There is usually a RW stamped on the end of the frame of the gang. Ken Sweet

It's a John Deere AW. Here is a manual on ebay.

JOHN DEERE OPERATORS MANUAL AW DISK HARROW - eBay (item 170606692198 end time Feb-28-11 09:33:43 PST)

You can also go to the John Deere website and look at the parts diagram.

If his disc is like the one in good first pic in the OP. It is not a AW, I have a AW and they are on roller bearings and have flex built inti the frame work with limiting chains and pulleys. The RW's are on Cast Box bearings usually and are all rigid framed. Ken Sweet
