I don't know about any other Kubotas but my 4 cylinder GL4240 is as smooth as my car. Whether it be idling or throttle wide open.

Consider the 38HP 3-cyclinder L3800HST. As a bonus, it has position control. It is an "economy" model (no mid-PTO), so it's probably still in your price range.
