Graybeard,
1. With ignition on, disconnect small wire at alternator, this should put lamp out. Now ground this wire's end to engine with ign still on, and lamp should come back on.
All of this is because lamp shoud be finding it's ground in the alt.
The alternator terminal that this wire came from should turn to pos voltage (14/15 volts) when engine runs. Put volt meter here and see if it does numbers on first startup.
Let's do the above and get some results before moving on.

cheers,

Update on the electrical issue :
I do greatly appreciate everyone's input but it's gotten beyond me.
The Dlr. is going to check it out; hopefully , with Factory consultation he can get it resolved.
I had a car that took 6 months of professional evaluation to find a "tiny" wire in the center of a bundle that was broken under the insulation. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Fortunately the tractor is working fine...
I'll let you know.
Thanks again, GrayBeard

All ,
'Not beating an old dead horse but last week my Dlr. replaced the instrument panel and the problem seems to be resolved !
Must have been a "glitch" in the electronics of the panel .
Just thought I'd close out the post.
Thanks again for the help; I learned some things.
