Needing a transit/level.......any advice.

   / Needing a transit/level.......any advice. #61
I have a friend who has done landing strips for planes (Gov contract.) His complaints included comments about the limited range of LASER levels and not having enough magnification in his optical transit.

I personally never shot a grade over 1000 ft or leveled a form much over 100 ft long. My personal hands on experience is quite limited. My watching experience is more extensive.

My most demanding work was navigation with sextants. I haven't seen anyone do it on a building site but if you turn a sextant 90 degrees (on its side) you can measure angles between reference points with terrific accuracy and repeatability and thus "FIX" positions with more precision than typically required. Of course in many instances some steel tapes would git 'er done easier but sometimes things get in the way.
