Hi. New member here with a question. I'm looking for an older JD utility model for doing some bush-hogging around my property but also something with a good reputation that I could keep and preserve for years. My limitation is the LENGTH of my garage/storage space. Currently I have an old MF 65 with a 5' shredder so I need something about that overall length. The MF is right at 11' long from tip of the hood to the end of the 3 point arms. I'm thinking about the only JD models that will be that length or shorter are likely 3 cylinder models. Maybe I'm wrong. I was thinking something like a 2155 or its predecessors might fit the bill but I've had a hard time finding overall lengths for any of these models.

Does anyone know the overall lengths of models like the 2155, 2040, 1020, etc.? How about 4 cylinder models like the 2355? Sounds like most of these models were well-loved and have good reputations.

I presume most any 3 cylinder JD such as those mentioned above will handle a 6' bush hog well (or will they?). How about a 7 footer? Too much mower? Are these 3 cylinder models all category 1? I imagine a 7' shredder would be category 2. Any advice on this decision would be appreciated. Thanks.

Enter "JD (model)" and search. Tractordata.com should pop up and will give length info. Might have to interpolate for tire size.

i.e. the JD 2150 shows at this link...
TractorData.com John Deere 215 tractor information

Wheel base of 4wd is 80.9 inches, and overall shows 122.6 inches.

You can track down a number of different models using tractordata.com

I just bought a 2240 yesterday, an 1981 model, so it's the later version, I'll measure it in a bit. It is a 3 cylinder tractor. My son used to run a 2155 with a 7' bushhog on a farm he worked on and he said it was fine with a 7' twin spindle unit--they're easier to run than a single spindle--it was a semi-trailing unit, I believe. He says it would even run a 10' bush hog but you had to slow down for high stuff.

Unfortunately, TractorData.com doesn't list overall length for lots of models including several of the ones I'm considering. It just lists wheelbase which doesn't tell me what I need to know.

Thanks, gary49. That's good to know. I wonder if a 2155 would lift and run a single-spindle 7 footer.

My son says the 2155 will run and lift the single spindle 7' bush hog, but it actually has an easier time with and 8' twin spindle set up. I measured my 2240 and it is right at 11' with the lower links of the 3 point hitch parallel with the ground (I have a road blade attached to it at the moment). It would be a couple of inches shorter with the lower links all the way down. My brother has a. 2155, but it is 150 miles away. My sense is that that tractor is st least as long as the 2240.

I didn't answer one of the questions in the first post. The 2240 and the 2155 have category 2 hitches, I would guess all the 3 cylinder JD's do.

Actually most JD 20-55 series utility tractors are both Cat l & Cat ll on 3 pt hitch with the aid of bushings & turning sway blocks.

My 2030 (4 cylinder) measures 12' in length, if that helps. NOT including the loader.
