Pros and Cons of a 2cyl.

I have a YM2000B and love it. Music to my ears. Hearing protection a must though. I grew up on a Kubota L260 so I wanted a 2 cyl. for the sound. 2 cyl. will give you more torque than a 3 cyl. also.

I have a Kubota L175 (2cyl) 17hp. Works great with a 4'RFM, have not tried to use a brush cutter yet. All the other stuff I have for it also works great. I wear radio style ear muffs.

I tried out several of the Yanmars when I was looking for a tractor and was amazed at how much the YM2000 could pull. It actually seemed stronger than the 3 cyl models that I tired of a little more HP. I had always heard the torque was better in the Yanmars in the two cylinder than a three.

The noise level was a little higher in the 2 cyl. but I just love the sound of the YM2000, and I think it's a good strong engine.

Although I finally decided go new instead, I still have a great fondness for Yanmars. They look good, and perform very well when all is right with them. Some of the so-called restorations done in Vietnam are a joke, but a good used Yanmar is a great tractor.

See my sig photos for the Americanized version of YM2000, called a YM240 and sold here by Yanmar Inc when they had their own dealers over here. They sold these green ones here until about 1982.

The same tractors made for the Japanese domestic market were painted red and were sold there labelled YM2000 until 1979. (and YM2000B with a fancier dashboard for a couple years more).

US used tractor dealers have been importing YM2000's by the containerload for years and by this time there must be 100 red Japanese ones here in the US for every green one sold here originally.

The YM2000's imported as 'Used-Grade A' will run forever. The ones 'reconditioned' overseas, the ones with the flawless paint and sometimes represented as a newer year model, are a gamble.

Parts availability is excellent on this model.

I love the 2 cylinder engines because of that torque. Torque doesn't just exist because an engine is diesel. Torque is due MUCH more to the stroke length than to which fuel is burned. Longer stroked slower RPM engines of the same displacement make more torque regardless of whether they are diesel or gasoline. The little 3 cylinder short stroke, high RPM diesels don't make nearly as much torque as a similar displacement 2 cylinder engine with the longer stroke and really don't make substantially more torque than a similarly sized gasoline engine. The high RPM diesels really are designed more similar to gasoline engines (and perform more like them) than the older, slower running diesels that gained diesels their well loved reputation.
