So, with the latest ice storm, I've started looking at generators. I posted to the attachments forum with no real answers. I figured maybe the bota forum would yield more.

I have looked at these on the web.

NorthStar

Winco

Baumalight TX

The Baumalight is the only one I can find with 11 pto hp required. The others require 14. The bx is 13.7.

If I'm only pulling 2-3k kw will my tractor be fine with the "cheaper" gens that require 14 pto hp, or am I way off the mark in thinking that?

Or, should I just get a gas stand alone unit. I like the idea of not having yet another motor to fix/repair/keep going. That's why I got the snow blower attachment for my bx, which I LOVE.

Thoughts, concerns?

You found some nice generators. I've been thinking of getting one of the pto driven units myself. I just need to learn more on how much power I need to run the house etc.

I have a gas powered 5500 watt generator now that I've never had to use but I do make sure it starts every year. ;)

I hope others will chime in with some thoughts.

You generally need about 2x the HP as kW so if you have 11HP at the PTO then you can generate about 5.5kW. If one 7kW gen is listed as 11 HP needed and another is listed as 14 HP needed then someone is fudging numbers.

In any event, you can run a larger generator than your PTO HP allows...just don't load the generator to full capacity. If you hear your tractor engine bogging down and the generator frequency drops way below 60 HZ then remove some of the electrical load.

A pto Gen ties up your tractor to where you can't use it for other task unless you have other tractors as I do.
It also creates the situation where you have more hours on the engine than on the tractor.

I'm guessing these topics will be popular for a few weeks at least here in NH - we got our power back yesterday (thank you PSNH guys!) after 6 cold and dark nights. Was thinking myself that my BX in the garage would make a darn fine genset powerplant. But think I'll wait until the profiteering dies down come spring before pulling the trigger.

Cdrew,
I have the Baumalight TX12000 for my BX23. I got it earlier this year, but haven't actually had to use it yet. (Other than testing the circuits after my generator panel got installed.) It's a pretty nice unit. I think I saw someone here on TBN say, that you should buy a little more generator than your tractor can handle, because if you're like most other people, sooner or later you'll get a bigger tractor.

Just a suggestion;
This is what I do, I have a 2000 watt Honda inverted generator that I normally use for my Rv when we dry camp. You can back feed it to what ever outlets you might need to power. Mine is back fed on my deck outlet and runs my refrigerator, tv and lights and furnace.I can get by for a few days with that setup. the cost of the Honda is about $1000.00 and it is very fuel efficent. I do have a much larger Honda if I want or need to run the whole house. My neighbor,(Dairy farmer) has a PTO generator that he runs from an big IH 1496, it powers his barn and house. Of course he does not worry about how many hours he has on tractor as he has manny.

Unless I've misread something here, he said his PTO hp was 13.7. That means it will run any of the 7kW generators he mentioned. OK, so he may not get the full 7kW but he will be so close I don't think it'll be noticeable. That 2hp per kW thing is just a rule-of-thumb, not a hard and fast law of physics. I'm not familiar with the Baumalight model but I think I'd go for one of the cheaper 14 hp products. As I recall, some members here have had good things to say about the Northstar pto generator. Do a search.

There is some amount of science to the 2Hp per KW rule. The number falling outside that range is probably using a peak, not continous measurement. We sell lots of Tiger Power 10KW's. The 10kw is continues, they peak to about 12.
