Pulling a \'Difficult\' Shear Pin

In the Kubota forum I let everybody know my Kubota front mount snowblower had a factory installed Grade 5 5/16 x 2" bolt as a shear pin. As a result, when I hit 2 rocks on 2 occasions the 60H drive chain broke instead of the shear pin.

Removing a sheared bolt is pretty easy: usually they just fall out. If a bolt is bent or soft or shifted, it is a much greater challenge because the bolt is effectively thicker than the hole its in.

Re: Pulling a \'Difficult\' Shear Pin

As luck would have it, a lot of shear bolts can't be driven out with a pin punch because you can't get at it. Such was the case with my blower. So after a lot of thinking (and much more swearing) I got an idea: I took a 1" cheapy cold chisel and ground a slot in it.

Placing this on the head of the bolt and whacking it a few times and out she came! Anyway it works amazingly well. Maybe its a dumb idea, but I thought I'd share it.

Hey,
That's a clever solution. Good thinking. I wonder if there's a manufacturer already. I can think of other similar uses.

Excellent tool. I know them shear bolts that bend are a rea;l pain... And the part I hate the most is it isnt' July when you are trying to get them out.

If it worked, it can't be that dumb of an idea now can it. Good thinking /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. G
