I didn't think to note what the output size of the JD shop tool was.

I'd like to look into the 1/2" in - 3/4" out version a little more (I suppose the MatcoTM750 or equivalent). I have a Craftsman 1/2" 250ft/# digital-click wrench.

Is the Matco the same brand your brother sells?

I have no idea how many brands of these things are out there.
I don't want cheap-junk, but this is not the kind of thing I need "the best" of, either, ...looking for a decent tool at a fair price.

I don't know anything about Matco. What's your opinion of the line vs others?

Yep, Larry, my brother is a Matco tool distributor, and Matco has an excellent line of tools, and good warranty. I believe Snap-on was the first to have the tool trucks calling on the mechanics, then a couple of other guys got into the business together with MAC tools. When they split, one got MAC and the other started Matco. Of course, you also have Cornwell, and in recent times, even Craftsman trucks calling on the garages. They all sell good tools; and of course, they all occasionally put out something that turns out to not be so good. As with most things, there's more I don't know than what I do know./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I work on air tools, and usually Snap-on products can only use Snap-on parts (at considerable expense in most cases), while MAC, Matco, and even Cornwell air tools are usually made for them by Ingersoll Rand, Chicago Pnuematic, or Sunex and the parts are the same (saves the mechanics money and time when I get them to work on). I'm not sure about the other companies, but the only thing Matco actually manufactures themselves is their line of toolboxes (very fine ones, too). As to which line of tools is best; just like which tractor brand is best; Kubota, New Holland, or Deere. They're all good; a lot depends on personal preference and the dealer.

I went to the Matco website, looking for the torque-multipliers.
Found no reference to them. Did searches using the nomenclature,and the "TM750" part #. Nothing. Sent an e-mail to "contact us" asking about them. Nothing.

Got any ideas for me as to how to get info?

(pet peeve; customer service that isn't)

Larry, I'm not sure what to tell you because things are changing so fast that I haven't kept up with them. Matco has their own computer software that the distributors use, and it's a most impressive system; beats the heck out of anything the others have. However, it has one major drawback; it runs on DOS instead of Windows. Matco has been saying, for 5 years, that it would be upgraded to run on Windows "within a few months." Just now was the first time I've even glanced at their web site in over a year. It has been strictly for advertising the company name, information for investors, and an ad for potential new distributors to contact them. The products are (or were) sold only through the distributors. My brother told me awhile back that Matco "intends" to set up web sites for their distributors, customers would be able to place orders on the Internet, and the order would go to the distributor for that customer's area. So . . ., I don't know just what they're doing with their web site at this time. But I'm afraid, like a lot of other companies, they want all business to go through a distributor rather than directly with the company, so you may (or may not) be right; there might not be any "customer service" directly from the company.

I had the same concern with my cutter... buying a multiplier for one or two things was way too pricey.
Try a rental place.

Thanks for responding. I have no issue with a company's distribution/sales/collection system.

I guess my position is that at least INFORMATION about the products that it hopes people will buy (however!) should be readily available. To show SOME of the product-line on a website with no reference at all to other products(if in fact the "multipliers" ARE produced and offered for sale) leaves a would/might-be customer with wasted time, frustration, and still no-info, for the trouble of visiting the website.

I'll go back once more, to see if I missed some lead to "my" distributor.
But if I hadn't learned it from you, nothing I've found so-far even hints that the company makes these tools!?

PatrickG, Thanks for the rental suggestion, I'll look into it.
Bugs me though, to think that I can't check bolts for tightness without going to a rental place. I know the tools needed to maintain this "heavier" equipment are not inexpensive. Guess I just figure it's all part of the total operation cost. I expect to let the shop-boys do (and charge plenty for) the really specialised stuff, but tightening bolts?? Tough to swallow.

Needless to say, like several posters here, the torque requirements on some of this stuff was an eye-opener for me /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif !!

Larry, I don't know whether any company lists all their products on their web sites; I doubt it. And Matco is really just getting started with theirs. Have you tried Snap-on, MAC, Cornwell, etc. to see what they list?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

No, I haven't. I was going on your comments, planning to buy Matco, if I liked whatever else I learned. So I was a little unfair to them, with my expectations,...frustrated with a dead-end search, and no e-response (THAT still frosts me, .,..if you invite a call, then answer the d___ phone! If someone is "just getting started" with a website, I'd say responding to invited inquiries is pretty basic.)

I'm not gonna give up, though, since you have some ref. to the multiplier. And I'm still thinking Matco. Guess I'll just have to find my area rep.

Larry, I agree that if a company posts a means of contacting them on their web site, they ought to respond to all inquiries.
