Tractor
Satoh S550G
So a quick background: I picked up my first tractor, a rough shape S550G, a few weeks ago for a couple hundred bucks. The condition was pretty typically bad, engine "seized," wheels locked up, rims rusted through, etc. I got the motor freed up, luckily was just a frozen alternator. The fuel system was gummed shut in most places so I cleaned the fuel tank, cleaned the carb, converted the fuel pump to electrical, replaced the coil, installed a battery and now she purrs like a kitten. I was able to pull the brakes apart and get them freed up and working again. Today I brazed a hole in the hydraulic line, so fingers crossed that works. Next up is replacing the PTO output shaft. I have no real plans for this thing once I'm done. I'll use it around the properties or sell it, or build a loader or who knows? I just enjoy projects I guess.

I was able to find a replacement on Ebay. Anyone ever replace one of these PTO shafts? Anyone own an S550g? Anything I need to know? I really appreciate the knowledge on this forum and figured I'd try to add something here.

After the PTO shaft is replaced, I'll test the hydraulics and hopefully everything is good there. Then it's fluid changes and tracking down some wheels to replace these or some blank rims and weld these hubs into them.

S550-G Elk
PB100 MAZDA Engine, 987cc 4-cyl Gas 1490/58.66 No 4WD

The S500 & S650 share the same engine family, but the ELK is only the PB100. So at the link below, that the best support you will find. :)

In this Mitsubishi-Satoh forum, pinned at the top, is a must have document.
It covers much of the info you will need with the Satoh. It has the listings of the books, model details and the parts support network.

The Elk is more rare than all the others. Should you make it shine again, even those who collect would be kindly interested.

Got the broken PTO shaft out and the "new" one installed last night. What a pain that was! I'm really curious how they did it in the factory. I ended up installing the shaft through the rear bearing with the engagement gear, adding the circlips on the rear bearing, then pressing the front bearing in by loosening a nut and bolt between the shaft and the differential against a piece of scrap 1/4" plate. I had a lot of choice words while knowing there was some easier method or tool I was missing. Either way, it's all in and freely spinning now.

I need a new PTO shaft seal. For anyone else needing one, it looks like a generic 62mm x 45mm x10mm rubber seal. I ordered one offline and will test when it arrives. For future reference, the forward PTO shaft bearing was a 6204 and the rear was a 6206. I was able to get them in stock at my local NAPA.

I managed to get the tires off what's left of the rims. Next up is trying to combine two rusted wheels into one good one...
