I was just after sun down when I was happily scalping and rutting my property
with the brush hog, when I happened to look down at my exhaust pipe.
Every now and then, I noticed several sparks exiting the exhaust?
(JD 855)

The whole reason I was cutting the brush was to reduce the potential fire danger.
Now I'm worried about causing a fire with the tractor?

I assumed it was probably carbon being blown out but I'm not sure.
Is this normal, is this carbon?
Was there ever a spark arrestor on these tractors?
Should I be worried?

Any thoughts?

I've had this happen on a seldomly used diesel truck. My thoughts are that the exhaust system would get hot while under load and the rust inisde the exhaust and/or muffler would heat up, detach and fly out. A few long pulls for that truck and no more sparks.

One never knows what might happen. I was cutting hay and the sun had just gone down. Something caught my eye and it was a fireball about 20yds behind my tractor. I stopped, turned off the PTO, and ran back and stomped it out. I then went back to get my drink out of the cab to pour on it and I could not find the spot. It was crazy. The only thing I can figure is I hit a rock just the right way to spark off a fire. I told some other hay guys and they said they have that happen from time to time. Man, I am glad it was at night otherwise it could have been ugly.
