Strip the 1/8 skin and weld 1/4 skelton to 1/4 tubing?

I am trying to figure the best way to attach the yellow assembly in the photographs to the two inch square tubing. The yellow is a 1/4 skeleton structure with an 1/8, or a bit thicker, outer shell.

If i leave the outer layer on, I can weld the ends of the 1/4 skeleton on the bottom section, but the top section would only be welded to the 1/8 skin, at the point it folds over the entire assembly.

It is a bunch more work, by I am considering removing the outer skin to get 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch weld.

My hunch is that welding to the skin would work as all of the top and bottom of the yellow would be weldable.

The first and third photographs show the position in which the yellow would weld to the two 2" square tubing.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

You could just cut holes or slots out of the skin next to the frame where you want to weld, not the whole thing. Your weld could then fill the hole back in (tie the skin to the new tube at that point) and as you keep going, tie this new weld to the frame structure as well.

But I also think that as long as the skin is well tied into its frame, just welding to the skin would be sufficient. If you were worried, you could add a few more beads on the back side of the skin to its frame to be sure it is well tied in.
