I'm pretty sure the throw-out bearing is good because I can feel the pressure on itIIRC I used to lock the clutch down in reverse and pulling a truck backwards.

Unless the clutch is behind the transmission, which I doubt, your clutch and clutch force are always in the same direction with the engine, irregardless of whether you are going forward or backwards1. Chain the tractor to a stout tree, put in in reverse in a low gear and back up
2. Use a stout tree and drive the tractor forward
