Good news story

With 628 hours on the L3400 HST, when engaging the RFM, it would go clack, clack, clack as clutch was released. Thought the PTO clutch was slipping, so adjusted it out to fully engage clutch with about an inch of free travel on pedal. Not it.

When the RFM PTO shaft was disconnected, it would not make the sound, but any load on PTO created a noisy clacking sound as PTO shaft stuttered to start spinning.

Neighbor checked bearings on PTO output shaft (No play, not it). Then neighbor pushed on the end of the PTO engage cable (He said it moved about ¼ inch). When clutch was released, the PTO smoothly spun up the RFM. Neighbor said the cable had probably stretched, so the cable adjusting nuts were loosened and adjusted out (Nuts moving toward the front of the tractor).

This fix saved the day. Hope it helps if you encounter the problem.

Yep, been there with my L3200. I have never been fond of that design - the "kid's bicycle handbrake cable" PTO control is a weak system.
