Trailer winch setup

Is anyone using a trailer mounted winch if so what make model cap? I'm looking at a hydralic tilt bed trailer with a winch mount. I don't have any immediate need for the winch but I prefer to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I was looking at the warn works line.

I concurr with your intent to get a winch... I have a manual winch on my 18 foot flatbed... have used it numerous times to crank a dead vehicle or tractor onto the trailer. I no longer recall what the capacity of the winch is, but know that I REALLY stress it when pulling a dead tractor. Thus, I'd recommend you go a little long on the capacity rating and be sure and mount it firmly so it can take the strain. It's something I use maybe twice a year.. but it is a life saver when I DO use the winch.

Thetrailer comes factory with the winch mount. I don't know the capacity of the mount yet. What cap should I be looking for? Also can this setup be used for dragging things like logs etc on the deck?

Warn is definitely a good winch, we've got them on some of our trucks. A 16.5K on the 4500. However, they are on the pricey end.

I had a winch mount put on my trailer as well for pretty much the same reasons (in fact have already used it to recover my daughters car.....beats towing charges.) I went the cheap route and figured I could upgrade later if needed. I'm sure it wouldn't last as long if I used it more often than I do. It's an off brand (Champion) made in China, but at under $400.00 for a 10K winch, I figured it couldn't be too bad. It has a receiver mount and quick connect battery cables, really not a bad setup. Got it at Sam's Club.

I have a 18' trailer and mounted a 3000# capacity winch from Harbor Freight. It has 50' of cable and came with a snatch block to double the capacity even though I have never used it. It has met all me need and then some for $69.

I mounted a piece of 3/8" plate and then mounted the winch to that. I started with a battery on the trailer but removed it and now just use my Jump Box. I mounted two battery lugs to a piece of plastic and marked the appropriately for + & -. I have used it to pull up 2 Corvettes, a Suburban, a Lumina, a Cavalier, and a Kia.

Good thing I drive Fords, someone has to rescue all those GM's LOL.....

Here is the winch but mine is not camo but all black. I will be away from the trailer until Thursday but it should be a easy job to fab something up for your needs.

I have a hydraulic tilt bed trailer. I made my own frame extension on front of mine to mount a box in which I installed a winch and an electric / hydraulic power unit. I added the power unit to replace a manually pumped jack that originally tilted the bed. The winch is an 8000lb unit I bought at HF. (not a famous name winch but it does what I need it to do) I sometimes use a snatch block pulley to double to pulling power if needed. I use a separate battery that operates both the winch and power unit and is charged whenever its plugged into my trailer hitch plug. I've used the winch about 20 times or so to haul up dead vehicles.

I would not own a trailer with out a winch on it. I have 8000 ramsey on my Gooseneck & 8000 warn on a reese mount the I use on my ball hitch trailers & 25 ton trailer. Many times I have had to double them to get the pull I need. I like the warn better it is about 25yrs old & the ramsey is about 10yrs old. I power them with 00 wire from the trucks batteries. Don't go cheap buy a good one & you will never regret buying a quality winch when you depend on it.

Now a little different aproach (I know not really what you were looking for).I had my winch on my trailer for almost ten years ,and thats probably about how many times it got used (cause I what too lazy to mess with the batteries most of the time,and I didnt use enoph to keep charged from truck).So when I made my new bumper,I made provisions for a winch behind it.Now all I have to due is pop the license plate off and I can winch stuff on the trailer anytime without messing with batteries and have a recovery winch when running truck solo ,although I havent used it that way yet.I do realize this is not the ideal setup for a northern climate do to road debre/salt (my truck doesnt get driven in the winter).Just thought I share,I realize its a little off topic.The winch is an 8000lb ramsey
