You need to provide a bit more detail in terms of how many, what size and what the ground conditions are.

Jumping in, if you are under 5 gallons and not doing a Christmas tree farm I would say a post hole digger. Over 5 I would use a back hoe. Removal if a tree permanently is either a back hoe or a chainsaw. Transplanting is a difficult beast where when you do it is as important as how you do it.

A bucket spade or similar is a goid place to start...Paumco Products Quick Spade Combo — Model# 1101-Quick Spade | Skid-Steers Attachments| Northern Tool + Equipment

Or spend the bucks and get something like this

Big-John Tree Transplanting Equipment Manuf.

Do a search for tree spades...

I plan on planting 30-40 trees in mostly clay. Some pine, crabapple, sugar maples. I saw that spade attachment and it does look pretty nice. I do have a FEL with a quick attach.

Tree size 48" tall pines, 2" dia. Hardwoods.

Our soil has a lot of clay, and the quick spade made short work of planting trees. We did about 20 a day with two men on the job.
