When you need more "oomph", you have to ease up on the hydro petal. Seems bass-ackwards, but that's how it works.

The direction pedals on an HST are not accelerator pedals. Set the machine at PTO speed on the tachometer, put the machine in low range, and start off with slow pressure on the pedals. Get up to a comfortable speed. Then try going up a hill. If the tractor engine starts to lose speed, back off the forward pedal a bit, don't push it down harder. Keep backing off the pedal until the engine speed recovers and continue up the hill at that speed. Takes a little bit of doing it to get the idea, but it comes quickly.
