Me and my CK have been busy. Almost there. Boy, those blocks sure get heavy after the first 100 or so.

Thanks everyone. Yes, the trick is to get that first row level, side to side, front to back, and block to block. That took quite some time to do. But, I can see how if they were not level, it would look aweful and not be very strong. If the first row is done right, then it's just stack and fill.

My steps..... I guess they are OK. I was puzzled by the double finished face that was needed on the one side. No matter how I stacked them, getting the caps to work out seemed to always be problematic: too wide for single caps or in need of small filler cuts. I probably should have just gone with open sided steps. Anyhoo, these are steps beside my barn. Aesthestics aren't so important. As long as they are functional and stable, I guess that is all that matters.

Your steps look great. I GAVE UP on the block steps and then went the easy road and did them in concrete.

Great job Gittyup. Looking at the picture makes my back and muscles ache so I can imagine what you must have felt like. How long did it take? Any tips on getting that first row lined up properly?

Gizmo you wall and steps look fantastic!

Island, I uses a nylon line to keep the row straight. I leveled the crusher run length wise and front to back before I started laying. Then I miticulously leveled each stone as it was placed, both to earth level and to each other. I used a short bullet level for each stone and a 4' level to keep stones level to each other. The 4' level would cover every group of three. A big rubber mallet came in real handy for beating them down when just a little high (I wore out my cheap chinese mallet and had to buy a new one today).

What you see in the photos took me 2 long (12+ hour days to do), not including the digging, trenching, and cnr leveling. That took another 8 hours or so. I worked on it today for another 8 hours or so, but at a much slower pace because I'm worn out. Now cutting through the fence and continueing the steps on up the hill.
