If you get bored, go to YouTube and search 'tractor plowing' or even better 'tractor ploughing'.

One thing you will notice is that Europeans seem very into plowing, or 'ploughing' in Britain. It seems like in the US plowing has gotten passe for large farms due to compaction and other issues? In any case, looking at these videos (which are very cool) I've seen some neat stuff:

It looks like they have ploughing contests with these massive Masseys, Fendts etc. And it looks like they attract big crowds too. Do they do this in the US? In the midwest maybe. I'd love to see a plowing contest.

I've seen some strange configurations too. Of course you see these long multi-bottom reversing plows, but on a couple of videos they are also pulling what looks like a disk, or maybe a cultipacker on a long outrigger and at the end of each row, it disconnects and the tractor picks it up when it turns and makes the next pass. They don't even slow down.

There are also some with these multi-bottom plows on the back AND the front! They push the one on the front!

Finally, some of them take it even further....RC! There are quite a few videos of 1/10 scale RC tractors in action... really plowing! One is pulling a water tanker and it pulls up to a pool of water and a boom comes out and lowers into the pool and fills the tank. Then it pulls away and starts spraying water. Again, all in Europe.

Just thought I'd point you guys over to YouTube to look at some of these. Almost all are from Europe. One wonders if they are more 'into' their machines than our farmers over here? I don't know.

Being an ex brit ..soil type /climate etc lends its self better to ploughing over there . Spent the better part of my youth ploughing for a custom outfit for 4 months of the year . you notice at most major ploughing matches the tractors of choice are MF/ Ford or older IH's ..:)

I think a lot of the minimal tillage processes depend on what you are growing. Where I grew up farming, they still plow (disc) the fields, row it up and plant but they do mostly cotton, milo, and soybeans with a small amount of corn. Those crops do better with tillage in our stiff soils of buckshot black clay and clay/loam. This all started back in late 60's to early 70's with effort to save fuel and labor cost and do everything with chemicals and one pass spring cultivator type tillage with planters on the same tool bar, spray rig in front putting out grass killer and preemergence chemicals to keep grass/weed seed from germinating, kind of one pass farming. Now the price of those have increased so much, it is not a lot of difference in price of no till versus till. The farmers in NE Lousiana use full tillage for the most part with chemical application to prevent seed germination of undesirables which save them money on cultivation and eventually leads to almost weed free fields save the windblown stuff that forever comes to haunt you. There were a few that used the no till for a few years but lower yields brought them back to full tillage. Some exception to this is milo and wheat which may work ok on minimum till especially wheat where you can burn off the straw and stubble. That sure does pollute the air though like cane field and rice field burning.

... You might enjoy this then.. The Laholm ploughing-festival ... and this is the speed-ploughing competition. I suppose you could think if it as tractor-pulling with a purpose...

I like this one, this guy has to be somewhere quick. I like the tires that they run over there, real wide and flat.

321.17 Hectares ploughed in 24 hours...

That's 793 acres, or 1 and a quarter square miles.
