The starter packed it in again for the third time and as you can see by the picture, You have to pull the blankty blank motor to service the starter. This took about 4 hours and about 1/8 inch of my left index finger
Green machine BOO,

I hope you heal quickly and fully, Woodstock.

I replaced the starter on my mid-80's JD-318 earlier this year - to the tune of $270.00. Fortunately I survived with all body part's intact (the chain hoist was a huge help). My 12 year old would like for me to buy a new machine to replace the John Deere and given the problems, repairs and associated $$$ I've racked up since I bought it (new), I'm inclined to agree that it'd be the smart thing to do - unfortunately at the present, another new tractor isn't in the picture. I've debated the purchase of a mower attachment for my Kubota B2710 (purchased last fall) but like the 318's smaller size for mowing (2 acres and a couple of trails) and general errands on my 7 acres.

Given the performance and satisfaction I've experienced thus far with my Kubota, when the time does come, I will very likely be looking orange first.

In your first picture of your JD I noticed one thing that might have been part of the problem. That hammer on the floor isn't near big enough for something that has caused you that much grief.

I'm curious as to why you felt you had to replace the starter. If it by chance happened to just make a "clicking" noise from the starter, I believe JD makes a relay kit to be installed so the starter solenoid wire gets direct battery voltage. Don't know if this was your problem or not. I have a mid 80's 318 with 900hrs and still the original starter. I did have to take the motor out of mine to get a mouse nest out of the fan. Took me just under an hour to remove the motor. Some of the cars I work are tougher to replace a starter. I'm not a big fan of JD but the 318 is one heck of a garden tractor! Sorry about the finger, seems like that happens almost once week to me /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif.
