One thing I noticed while looking at the Deere site and I haven't seen much mention of the tractor on the site but the 3005 seems much cheaper than say a 2320 even and much much cheaper than the rest of the 3 series.

I am sure there's a reason and I haven't really compared the specs side by side.

The 3 series stuff is more than need anyhow especially in overall weight and size of the machine. It's not huge but a little big for my needs and would limit my use a little on smaller properties.

But why is the 3005 a lot cheaper. Deere's site has it listed stock (No Imps) less than 11,000 dollars.

I should go to the DOT site and run a comparison but I thought asking here might be ok too.

The 3005 is a completely different tractor than the 3x20 tractors. It is smaller and weighs about a thousand pounds less. It is a model that has been around a long time under previous model designations. A nice simple machine with minimal electronics. It has a collar shift transmission vs the hydro on the 2320, and E-Hydro or power-reverser transmissions on the 3x20.

So it's kind of old school versus some of the new technologies.

Thanks JD.

JD755 summed it up nicely...

I had a 790 (same as the 3005..different designation) and before that, a 670 (same as the 790 with a smaller engine, tires and a bit shorter wheelbase (IIRC).
Good machines for 3-10 acres if you want a very simple and well balanced tractor. The design stems from the 1970's or early 1980's and hasn't changed much in the ensuing years.
The only thing I didn't like about the 790 was reverse. Reverse Low is slow...you get passed by snails and turtles. Reverse High was too fast (at PTO RPM), although less RPM was quite managable.

Definitely worth consideration if you want a good tractor!

Yes, the 3005 (790) is a VERY basic no frills tractor.

My grandfather has a 770 (I think...), and it looks very smiler to a 790.

If you look at the 4005 it is pretty much the same machine except a lot bigger.

At the DOT site they don't even have the 3005 listed but I compared the 790 and one thing that sticks out right away is that the 790 only has an 815lb Hitch Lift capacity vs 1150 for the 2320.

The 4005 is the latest version of the 990 which was previously the 970. Over the 790/3005, it adds about 900 pounds, a four cylinder engine, and planetary rear gears
