Great looking board here. Anyways on to the problem, My Old Gal took a little
break on me for the first time since 1977 (240D) incredible machine.
Was plowing some heavy snow yesterday, when I went to shift into reverse,
she just stalled out. Restarted and shifted into 6th (this is a hi-lo 8 speed trans)
and let out the clutch NOTHIN! played around with the shifter a little got it to go into gear and continued on, seemed fine no rattle or anything when in gear.
Went to shift into reverse again, same as before played around with the selector shifting it into all patterned positions and then it shifted into reverse.
Put it in neutral to get off the tractor and reposition the blade, and if I wouldnt have set the parking brake I would have run myself over!!! It was in a forward gear when selector was in neutral. Anybody know what I should be looking at
to fix her up?? Thinking a shift fork but not sure. Also one thing I did notice, when it is parked (in neutral and running) something is rattling or slapping around a little bit in the trans or gears. However when it is running in gear it seems just fine and dandy solid as a rock, just playing roulette to get it into gear is the challenge. I have found that If I shift back to 7th gear rather then forward left into 6th it engages back (forward right to reverse every time). Anyway as I said other then keeping fluids and filters clean on the old gal I have had 30 years of nothing to fix, so would appreciate any insight from the experience out there. Thanks

Take the shifter plate off the top of the trans . where the shifter is & check the shifting fork . It could be bent or worn

Your 240D has a stub at the bottom of the shift lever that fits into a guide for moving the shift forks. Either your stub guide is worn out or (more likely) a shift fork has worn enough to jump a slide gear. Although it seems to hold fine in gear, pulling the cover is easy and inspection shouldn't be put off. The entire assembly is pretty straight forward.

When I traded for my 240D, about 8 months ago it didn't have a shifter boot or anything else. I could pickup and the shifter would come out, or when I shifted if I lifted unknowingly it wouldn't shift. I removed the nail they had for a pin in the shifter and put in a pin. made a spring and cover to hold it all down. It works better now, but will miss a gear if I hurry.

Thanks for the info, I will get it in the barn this weekend and have a look see, Ill get back to you with any new follow up questions. Thanks again,
One quick question though about the front drive, is the front a limited slip,(wheel with solid footing spins) or is it supposed to be positive traction(both wheels spin in sync) I seemed to remember both wheels digging in but last weekend in the snow only one or the other would spin
even with differential lock held down.(I assume differential lock only controls rear axle??)

My 240D is as described, one wheel or the other spins while one is anchored. You are correct that the diff lock only affects the rear wheels. (So I guess 2 wheel drives are actually one wheel drive and 4 wheel drives are actually two wheel drives, except with the diff lock, where we get 3 wheel drive). We use Mercedes Unimogs and those are a true four wheel drive if selected.

Ok fellas, Indeed it is a broken shift fork, Now if I can get these photos to work I will show you whats up
http://www.tractorbynet.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/4729/size/big/sort/1/cat/500
Looks like a pretty big hunk broke off.
Now Heres a few questions
1. How do I get the roll pin out that holds the shaft in? Just drill it out and replace it?
2.any other good advice in this repair? I have never done one like it.

Heres the other problem, Like I said it looks like a pretty good hunk of the fork dropped into the trans. I fished around for a half hour with a pencil magnet and could not find it let alone fish it out.

1. should I be concerned about getting it out? I see no collateral damage in the gear box from it.
2. Is there a passage out of that gear box for a piece that large to slide out of? If not its gotta be in the gear box right?
3. If it is imperative to get it out of there, any suggestions in better fishing technique?
Thanks guys, Im gonna email Hoye the photo and get the necessary parts.
1. Is it necessary or maybe wise to replace all the forks?
2. besides the broken fork are there other parts I may need?roll pins etc..?
If for some reason you cant view the photos please let me know what I am doing wrong.
Thanks again

If I had doubts about getting the roll pin out, I would take the cover to a transmission shop. They would have the tools and experience to do this in 5 minutes.

I don't know if that transmission is the same as the 2wd versions. On mine the filter is inside a triangular plate on the front of the transmission. If you drain the fluid and remove the plate, and filter, there would be plenty of room to fish around inside the bottom of the transmission. You would probably have to push the broken fork up toward the top opening with a stiff wire, but at least you could see it. And I would clean the filter (a simple wire screen) after this incident anyway. It could be full of fork fragments.

Drive the roll pin out with a punch, remove the filter , like califorina said and you should be able to get the broken parts out.

I would get the broken fork out some how. It may get caught in the gears and cause a real mess
