1710 Ford
Great Versatile Tractor
Model Year: 1983

I have had this tractor for 24 years now. It came with the house and I would not know what to do without it. It is the right size for many things. As soon as I bought it, I purchased a loader for it which has also been invaluable. I use it for grading, landscaping, mowing (rough and finish cut), lifting, dirt handling, garden tilling, raised bed creation, work platform, mowing and raking hay, moving things, plowing snow, etc. I have FWA with diamond tread high flotation rear tires and R4 front tires. I have never been stuck and I do not make tracks even on a wet lawn. It has been to the shop once since I have had it. It failed to start for me one time at -20 Fahrenheit (a rare temperature for our area). Negatives - I wish it had a little more hydraulic flow so the loader would be a little faster. A more standard drawbar would also be nice for pull type power take-off implements. All of my kids have learned to drive on it.

Pros: Just the right size with easy on and off, has never failed me, normally it amazes me how much it can do
Cons: Slow hydraulics

I bought a tractor for all-round use clearing, snow plowing, etc and it has really done a good job so far. It had a couple seals leaking from sitting in the barn for a long time (easy fixes). It start's easy and runs super smooth. I hope for another 30 years out of it.

Pros: Easy operation, all metal
Cons: None yet

Love Our 85 Ford 1710
Model Year: 1985

I bought the tractor from a neighbor with a front loader, single power take-off plow, flail mower and rake. It has a lot of use but runs great. It has a few details I have to work out but I can't wait to get on it again.

Pros: Easy to work on, no plastics, parts available, looks great
Cons: Battery location

4WD Compact Ford 1710: A Very Handy Tractor
Model Year: 1987

I bought his machine from a used equipment dealer to replace the 1620 lost in a barn fire. It has a little age on it (27 yrs), is old enough to have a few maintenance issues now, but is quite good enough to keep fixing. I really like the tractor. The little 3-cyl diesel seems to have a lot of power, turn radius is good for tight spots, 4WD speaks for itself and the 3+R primary shift and 4-sp secondary one provides more options than this little machine really needs. Land Pride bush hog & finishing mowers and a scraper blade make it very useful. I do wish it had a hydraulic tap. If it did, I'd sell my old International 340 utility, but that's another story.

Pros: 4WD, good power, 12 forward speeds & 2 reverse, maneuverable.
Cons: No hydraulic hookup.

Best Tractor I've Owned
Model Year: 1985

3 cylinder diesel with 4x4 and front bucket and bush hog. Bought very used. Front power steering seal kept blowing and clutch in need of repair. I adjusted the clutch and replaced o-rings in diverter. The hydraulic hoses were cracking and joints in need of grease. I've learned a lot about these tractors except how to stop the o-ring from blowing. Keep researching and finally found a solution. However it will cost another $300.00. My just keep doing. Don't use it a lot, but it will do whatever I need done. My last tractor wouldn't lift much weight in the front bucket. This is a great tractor. Just remembering it is just a small tractor. I've pulled stumps, cleared brush, pushed over some pretty large stumps, moved my 300 gallon LP tank. I am not saying I haven't had a few issues, but nothing I can't fix except o-ring issue...and still working on that. Someday I believe I will get a solution for that too.

Pros: Good hydraulic abilities, great little diesel engine, 4x4 is awesome.
Cons: Have to replace that o-ring every now and then. Quick replacement though.

Ford 1710 Tractor
Model Year: 1986

This tractor has served my needs for the past 12 yrs. Used it to bush hog & mow---nothing very brushy---mostly pasture. Hooked a tiller & discs & middle buster to it for my garden every year, and use a box blade frequently, for different projects. Never had any major issues with it, but I kept the filters changed yearly. I have enjoyed using this tractor and have no plans to replace it.

Pros: Good all round utility tractor.
Cons: Not good for heavier jobs.

Fingers Crossed
Model Year: 1983

Our purchase, which hopefully won't turn into a regret, was sight unseen other than some photos and description on the internet. This tractor had the hp, 4wd, FEL, relatively low hours that I was looking for at an affordable price. It starts fine, runs fine. Hydraulics work fine, hold pressure, and are responsive. I'm gathering the filters, oil, etc. to replace everything from scratch, but as this is my first tractor, I'm having some trouble knowing my way around a diesel engine and hydraulics. So far I'm very happy with the purchase. There is some serious rust of the radiator support, probably from salt and weather during it's life in PA but also looks like the radiator leaked at one point and wasn't attended to. I have a friend that is very knowledgeable about tractors, so he's a big help. And I look forward to the resources and knowledge that I find on TBN. Thanks so much, in advance.

Pros: FEL and 4wd.
Cons: Rust.

Junior: The Everything Tractor
Model Year: 1984

I bought the tractor with the house and property in 1993 so the tractor was about ten years old. I almost immediately put an FEL on it and use it on a regular basis for just about everything. It is just the right size so that it does not tear up the lawn or leave indentations even when wet but it has enough power that I have skidded 30" hardwood logs, graded hillsides, and mowed with a Bush Hog stuff that was taller than the tractor. I have what may seem to be an odd combination of turf tires on the rear and industrials on the front but they work very well together for the many uses. I use it with a 5' finish mower, 5' Bush Hog, 60" garden tiller, 7' sickle bar mower, 6' landscape rake, 6' blade, 5' box blade and many other implements that I have borrowed over the years. Trouble virtually none other than self-inflicted such as fuel line gel or running out of fuel. I have had both front axle drops leak,an internal hydraulic leak and a muffler rust out but that is all I have had to repair. I have used it for landscaping of all types, garden tilling, mowing, wood cutting and hauling, digging, moving things around, cleaning out barns, driveway grading, snow removal, log skidding, and even backing into my pond with the landscape rake to drag weeds out (up to 30" deep). It is very easy on fuel, handy on and off, reliable, easy to drive, decent hydraulics, and fully functional with good weight distribution. My wish list for it would be to have a live PTO and a little higher top end (about 11.5 mph).

Pros: Functionality for its size, compactness, durability and reliability.
Cons: No live PTO, low road gear.

We purchased this tractor to help with our truck farm operation in 1987. It was a great addition to our equipment. 4WD is a definite plus for this tractor.

Pros: Power.
Cons: Roll bar makes storage a problem.

Bought the tractor with the property. A km of steep eroding road, snow removal wood hauling etc. taxes the 3 cyl. engine, but it's a hard working reliable machine.

Pros: Very maneuverable, 12 speed, easy maintenance.
Cons: A little light for what I ask it to do.

Love This Tractor
Model Year: 1996

I have owned this tractor since it was new. I have had very little problems with it. I bought it with a front loader and a backhoe. It has handled all of the things that I need it to do. I would recommend this tractor to anyone who has smaller jobs to do. I am currently looking for a little bigger version of what I currently have.

Pros: Very versitile.
Cons: Very cold blooded.

Ford 1710 4WD Tractor/Loader/Backhoe

I have a weekend home in the Catskill Mountain consisting of 50 acres on top of a mountain which includes flat and rolling meadows, some steep hills, flat mountaintop and several acres of grass surrounding the log home. I love the 60 mile view from my home. I purchased the tractor used and have used it extensively to brush hog the fields and grass, dig trenches for electric and telephone wires and storm water ditches. I have an 800' gravel driveway which requires constant maintenance using my TLB. I also plow snow on occasion although I have a person that plows as I am not there everyday. The tractor has performed well and it just gave me my first big repair when the 4wd drive shaft coupler snapped and the frame twisted and several welds broke. Considering what I have done with the machine and it's age, I am very satisfied. I also know it is starting to tell me I need a new(er) machine. I like New Holland and realize the 27HP 1710 is a little small for my needs. I have heard recently some not so good things about the Boomer CVT tranny as it is too complicated and uses computers? Really!? I like the style, design, etc but am considering a used TC40DA with a hydro tranny which I have heard good things about them. My present 1710 doesn't have synchro tranny, but I have never had problems however realize it would be nice to have that instant reverse option rather than shift when doing loader type operations.

Pros: Good low cost machine that has been very reliable.
Cons: A little small for my needs and starting to give me more maintenance.

Used 1710
Model Year: 1984

I am very pleased with my Ford 1710. This was a 28 year old machine when I got it, you can tell it was used hard and banged around (all the lights are broken off), but all of the mechanical stuff is not broken or bent, so it must be very rugged.

Pros: It has live hydraulics/pto. Axles/drive shafts are very beefy.
Cons: The 2 stage clutch does not release the pto shaft. Apparently a common problem.

Have FWA and FEL. Wouldn't be without them - they make a huge difference in what I can do with the tractor. Still I use it for everything and it is great!

Pros: The right size for a small yard. It can handle a 5' Bush Hog yet does not tear up the yard.
Cons: Hydraulics are a little slow. Wish it had a little higher top end.

This was our first 4wd Tractor with a front end loader. Our use is general from cutting grass to wood splitting to road maintenance and snow clearing. Tractor is great. I will never buy another tractor without 4wd or a front loader. For general use it is invaluable.

Pros: It starts all the time. Cannot beat that.
Cons: A little small at 27 hp.

Ford 1710 4WD 12 Speed Synchromesh PS
Model Year: 1984

I bought this to replace a Ford Jubilee and to pull a 15KW/3OKW PTO generator along with a loader, finishing mower, box blade, and cultivator. Looked at Deutz but their 30 hp diesel was discontinued, Kubota (at the time too narrow tread stance for Georgia and awful hydraulics), John Deere and Massey Ferguson (235 had transmission powered hydraulics; 245 was live, but a bit heavy for application). I settled on Ford 1710 mainly because of high clearance design of FWD. This tractor was primarily used with a 5' finishing mower for tending to 5 acre lawn, as well as a 5' bush hog for pasture. It has also used as a whole-house standby generator during ice storms with an Onan 4-pole PTO generator. Only replacement parts have been water pump and clutch and normal wear blades, belts and such for the finishing mower. It lacks draft control, but otherwise hydraulics and transmission is very good and plenty of power. I don't care for single hydraulic pump (which is slow on loader), nor do I like the priority valve operation for power steering, nor the 2-stage clutch for PTO (this clutch is poorly designed and is not adjustable for the PTO; I would prefer live independent PTO). On balance, this is an excellent tractor with 4WD which easily makes it out pull heavier tractors (I recently pulled out a neighbor's International 444 that was stuck in his field, for example). My son recently repainted it (though it still needs new decals) and we used a tip from tractor on line to replace brake linings. The parts are expensive, but it hardly uses any. If you can find one, it's the pick of the compacts for this age.

Pros: Reliability, 4 WD Clearance and perforance, transmission, power steering
Cons: 2-stage clutch has no adjustment for PTO, lacks draft control, live indepent PTO is better.

Bought tractor used. Got a great deal . 4x4 with loader. Absolutely love the synchronized tranny. Didn't steer properly , lift was slow. Reversed front wheels and changed hydro filter. It had collapsed.Does so about once a year. That's really the only trouble I've had with it. Oh yeah. I cut the fender off from right in front of where it bolts on to the floorboard straight up to the top. Really neat job, and a lot easier to get on and off. Used car door protector moulding to cover the sharp edge over very with the machine.

Pros: shuttle tranny, 4 x 4, fuel use, adequate power, loader
Cons: battery location, collapsing hysro filte
