John Deere 5083, Disappointment

I owned this tractor for 3 years. I traded it off for a Kubota 9540, massive difference in quality and reliability. I have owned John Deere products for over 30 years. This tractor is the weakest performance tractor I have ever owned. It spent more time in the shop than in the field, mostly basic issues, every time I went in the field I took off a hydraulic line, same fields I have done for yrs. and never had any issues. The tractor is light duty compared to the Kubota. Tippy, first Deere I ever owned. I felt cheated!
Pros: Nice cab.
Cons: Cheap materials, light duty, tippy, seems to want to break every other time I use it.

John Deere 5083e TLB Review

Some aspects of this machine are amazing, like the lift capabilities on the loader. I had additional hydraulics added to the loader and have a grapple. The combo is awesome. The first day the dealer brought it home, I was using the backhoe JD595 and the hydraulics were not right. They brought my trade in (NH TC40) back and it was in the shop for 45 days. After that I was trying to go up my driveway (steep incline) and had no power, they came out and it was the fuel lift pump. I had to purchase the extended warranty in order to protect my investment. Thank God I did. The PTO is now shot. I have not been able to complete a real project without something happening.
Pros: Loader, heat and air.
Cons: Undependable.

John Deere 5083E Initial Review

I started doing bush hogging and dirt work on the side in 2008 when I was in high school. My dad lent me $12,000 to purchase my first tractor, a 1999 John Deere 5210 2WD with a 520 loader and a Bush Hog 286 mower. Through the years, business picked up, I bought larger implements and yes, paid dad back for his loan. This year, I landed several good contracts including two large airports, municipal contracts with city and parish (county) as well as some good but rough jobs with subdivision developers. After working the 5210 into the ground this summer (1400 hours from March to October). I had the money to buy my own tractor and write it off through my LLC. I went with a 2012 John Deere 5083e with Tier 3 emission compliant 4.5L 4cyl 4045D engine, 553 FEL with bucket and hay spear to feed hay to our cattle this winter. Although I have only had it for a month, it has thoroughly impressed me. I can cut thick grass, bahaia, Johnson Grass and turf on the airfields that is around 5 ft. high at the Louisiana Regional airport, down to 4 inches with my MX10 at roughly 7.3 miles per hour without choking it a bit. The PowerReverser is a huge jump for me from the old SyncShuttle on the old 5210. It makes spreading dirt and FEL chores a breeze. The cab is quite roomy and comfortable, air and heat work great (Keep the cabin filters clean). I have had plenty enough power to do anything I have asked it to do. I pulled an 18' set of disks to plant ryegrass for feeder calves this winter and it pulled with no problem, keep in mind I was pulling them shallow for grass seed. The MFWD is great for scooping dirt out of piles that have been sitting for a while that have grass on them, with the 18.4-30 tires, there is hardly any slipping and ripping up yards and pasture. Just be sure when engaging the MFWD, because of the mechanical lever, let it roll forward a bit and when taking it out, let it roll back a bit. Makes it fall in and out a heck of a lot easier. The 553 loader has plenty of lifting power for moving heavy objects such as diesel tanks and trees. I did a job a week or so ago where I had to move a 50" diameter oak tree that was in a friends yard. The tree was cut in about 5' sections and when I went to pick the base of the trunk up with pallet forks, it lifted it about 3 feet off the ground at idle then wouldn't go anymore. Even with the loader maxed out, the back end of the tractor did not feel light or "squirrely" at any point driving to the burn pile even with nothing on the back and no water in the tires. The tractor is extremely stable and well balanced. When I got there, I revved it to about 1800 RPM and with a little roll back was able to lift it to the height needed to get it on top of the pile. I cannot say enough about the tractor and how much it makes my job easier. I am comfortable all day, even with the mechanical spring seat, it is a very plush ride. Lastly, the 540E PTO is a great option especially when running my woods BB840X (7ft) cutter. I have done real estate property with super steep inclines and, with the Epto on, it still ran the mower great and left a great finish. I would not recommend running in the 540E with a 10ft, or a 15ft Batwing (Rhino FR180), but in the regular 540 setting, it runs it perfectly fine. The 5083E is an awesome tractor for what I do. And anyone wondering how it handles a baler and bales, I had a chance to bale about 175 silage bales that we tubeline wrapped for our cattle this winter and it handled the John Deere 458 Silage Special with no problem. Running around 6 miles an hour. It also handled the 10.5 ft Kuhn hay cutter with power to spare. My dad was skeptical of the little tractor with his old school, "it has to be a 6 cylinder to generate power" attitude but, Ill tell you he was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the 5083E as well. We have several larger tractors we use on our cattle and hay farm, all John Deere, a 7230, two 7130's and a 7420. With what we do with them, It is good to know that my tractor can hang with his. It has been a dream of mine to own my own business for quite some time and, I have always been told that your business is only as good as your equipment and, I am confident that I have the right equipment now. I will be graduating from LSU next fall in industrial engineering but I hope to have this business going strong enough to not have to use my degree. Back to the tractor, I will keep you folks updated on it's durability and performance. I am "going by the book" as far as break in oil, filters and service. I plan on putting over 1500 hours on her next year so, expect a review then. For anyone buying, I would strongly recommend the 5083E. Perfect Machine

Our 5083 has the 553 FEL and handles it just fine. We do everything with it on the farm such as moving hay bales and dead trees. The heaviest thing we move are 2,000 pound fertilizer tanks. We love having it and the cab makes it feel like home. With the excellent air conditioner, radio and the buddy seat it is a very nice cab. The transmission is smooth and the engine sounds great.
Pros: Cab-loader-plenty of power-heavy rear end-smooth transmission.
Cons: None.

2011 5083E Limited

Bought tractor new. Paid to upgrade the FEL to a 563 (with triple mid-mount valve) since I was going to be doing a lot of FEL brush clearing work with a grapple bucket for a few years. I have had problems with tripping the hydraulic relief valve along with a scream from the hydraulics. I've had 3 coolant leaks; one at the turbo. I've had problems with the power reverser---is currently not working. I've had problems with the PTO engagement lever not staying engaged - had to be replaced.
Pros: Outside of the slow hydraulic FEL cycle time, coolant leaks, PTO lever problem and power reverser problems it's been a good tractor.
Cons: Slow, noisy hydraulic cycle for FEL. I expected less trips back to the dealer for repairs with a new John Deere. I expected better performance from the upgraded FEL.

Good All Around Tractor

I have the 5083e with cab and h 260 loader, front fenders, and power reverser with loaded rear tires. For the ones that think a cab is not worth it let me tell you, it is like farming from your recliner in the house and keep in mind I am 26 and saying this. The cab is very nice I only have the one button air seat I thought Deere ordered the deluxe seat with 3 options from the M series but I only ended up with the one button. But the seat is nice so I didn't complain about it lol. This is the perfect tractor for a small cattle operation 112 acres here in southeastern Ohio. It has a lot of power and the neighbor round baled with it and said it had more power than his 85 horse Ferguson. I have done some plowing and disking with are heavy 10 foot disk and it had no problems. The plow was only a two 16 John Deere but I believe it can handle a four bottom in good ground or a three in clay soil like I have. I never had to run the tractor over 1700 rpms while plowing. This was in 3 b at about 4 mph. I have done a lot of brush hogging and it is a sweet comfortable ride. You have to be careful about running over bush there is no belly and not one that you can buy yet. There is a lot of hydraulics lines and filter and ac unit that is under there. The the loader lines can be run up and over the loader mount to help prevent some problems. The front tires are very soft and easy to gash open I am having one repaired now. I have a 7 foot haybine and the tractor runs it very good at 4 mph in e PTO option.The tractor runs my 5x5 round baler at 1700 regular PTO in 4 b at bout 4.5 mph never lost any power even on hills. I also have the h260 loader and wow it is beefy and powerful if you feel that you want to do a lot of digging the tractor and loader are ready for it. It is very easy to get on and off takes a real time of about 12 mins on and off with no help and no right hand door. Be careful with this loader 'cause even with loaded rear tires, I can easily pick the whole end of the tractor off of the ground with a full bucket of dirt or any other heavy items. I recommend getting 4 wheel weights for the back. The 4 wheel drive is the best thing since the pocket on a tee shirt lol. It is kind of hard to get out though, but if you raise the tires off of the ground with the loader than it comes right out. Without the loader just rock back and forth and it will come out. But I did have a few bugs that had to be worked out: one was a valve in the three point arms or rock shaft. Bent loader bracket. The power reverser had to be re-calibrated, the dome light. But I have 86 hours on it now and love it. The total package was $49,400.
Pros: Powerful, comfortable, reliable, nice, capable, fun, 'bout 2.8 gah on fuel, and don't forget it's green and yellow lol.
Cons: Soft tires, light in the rear end.

I am very pleased with my 5083E. Plenty of power with a very comfortable cab. After 53 hours of use I would recommend for anyone looking for a new tractor. My only complaint is the dealer. It took three months to get the tractor delivered to me (there were 4 on the lot but took his time getting it set up) and have been waiting 2 months for them to fix a hydraulic leak on the front remotes.

Cons: Should have gotten the universal loader attachment not the JD.

This tractor has a lot of bang for the buck. It is economical and reliable. Just right for light chores around the farm. I have a great dealership too.

We bought it for our 80ac property. The tractor is the perfect size for our property. We live in a snow country; 5083E cleans 4-5' of snow banks without any problems. Plowing, disk or other dirt work with this tractor is a pleasure. Hydraulics are good to power the biggest 3pt backhoes you can find. The only "con" if you can call it, is that it is too heavy for my garden work, but it is not really meant for this type of work anyway. I'm still getting over the price tag shock, but that memory wears off the more time I spend on this tractor.

JD 5083E Experience

We use the 5083e for mowing, light harrowing, and with a small dirt pan. It works well in maintaining our farm where we not rent out the cropland. We use in maintenance of tree plantings, farm roads, etc.
Pros: Comfortable to operate.

Great Tractor

I like everything about this tractor except the 3-point lever. It's too low and hard to activate for box blade work and the like. AC is super cold even on a 95 degree day. I looked at Case, Kubota, and Deere and I am very pleased with my decision.
