John Deere 5225

I bought my 5-cylinder, 56 hp, straddle-mount 5225-with-542-loader from a local used-equipment dealer. It has 45 PTO hp. It was a "fixer-upper" and had been poorly maintained. It had salt-spray corrosion on some painted surfaces, dirt was packed into many places in the under-carriage, and it needed several minor parts. But it ran well and was the size I needed. I replaced the 4WD servo and also a spacer in the PTO clutch pack that was oversized and wouldn't let the PTO disengage, but after all the repairs, I still came out ahead concerning the purchase price plus repair costs. Concerning performance, the 5225 starts easily and has power and torque to spare. It makes bush mowing a breeze and can climb any hill I've tried. The telescoping 3-point hitch makes implement hookup very easy. Engine-oil filter change and fuel-filter change are accessible and straight-forward. The PTO can be disengaged independently from the transmission, which is very convenient.
Pros: Easy to start, even in cold weather. Plenty of power and torque. Part diagrams can be found on-line and parts are easily available through the local JD dealer.
Cons: It consumes a large amount of fuel due to it's 5 cylinders. John Deere recommends ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, which is pricier than the off-road #2 diesel fuel I used to buy. It has a relatively-large turning radius compared to a similar-sized 2WD tractor and won't turn as tight as my old IH 2400A, but I can live with that. Being a Deere, replacement parts can be expensive.
