950 John Deere
JD 950
Model Year: 1979

Solid tractor.Mine only has 2WD but handles most situations well with ag tires. The machine is easy to work on and maintain. I have had no issues aside from regular maintenance and would recommend the JD 950 to anyone wanting a reliable used tractor.

Pros: Reliable, easy to maintain, stable.
Cons: Slightly under-powered.

950 John Deere
Works Well Despite Hard Use
Model Year: 1990

Picked this up for 6.5k. FEL and 4WD. From the looks of it, somebody has been hard on her, but she runs like a champ. Starts right up in near zero temps, doesn't smoke, hydraulics function fine (but slow at first). Handles well, easy to manipulate, rattles a bit. A little light, need to add weight in the back. Only problems are a leaky seal on the front left and the PO cut off the top of the roll bar.

Pros: Reliable, strong, parts easy to find.
Cons: JD wants too much for weights. And paint. And everything else.

This is an excellent tractor for a smaller farm. I am very pleased with the machine. It is a typical John Deere. EXCELLENT (I am biased towards all John Deere equipment)! I think it is hard equipment to beat. I have a workhorse loader mounted on it and usually keep a J.D. rototiller mounted on the back. I never cease to be amazed at how much work I can accomplish with this rather small machine. I believe the heavy tiller helps to counter balance the loader and give the tractor more traction. I push, lift, load, haul, bulldoze, and in general, work the heck out of the entire unit. I till up acres of ground and am always attempting to build up my soil. I really like this unit and do not know what I would do without it!

Pros: A top quality machine overall. Highly recommended even though an older used machine, it still is one of the best.
Cons: I really can't think of any thing I don't like about this little 950.

This is a pretty good tractor for mowing as I use it. I am pulling a 5 ft. John Deere shredder. My model did not come with power steering which would have been nice. The 3 cylinder Yanmar engine runs great but does not pull quite as good as my old 2 cyl. Hinamoto. I had to weld up and re-grind the gears in the steering box. I also has water in the transmission. I think it was leaking around the shifter boot. I has a bit of a weird shift pattern and does not like to shift on the fly. I am wishing I could have found a Yanmar tractor with a front-end loader and shuttle shift. But all and all this is a good tractor for my use.

Pros: Basic good working tractor.
Cons: No power steering, no shift on the fly.

Bought my 950 used from a horse ranch in San Diego County. Paid $3950 which I thought was a fair price. Have looked for months on various internet sites with no luck. Was actually looking for a 1020 but never found one. Having grown up in the mid-west on a farm with JD 4020/3020/etc, this is a small tractor, but just right for my present purposes. So far it looks and functions well. It has power steering, dif. lock, cat #1 three point, and two hydraulic outlets. The only thing that it lacks is live PTO.

Pros: Hey, its a John Deere.
Cons: No live PTO.

I have not had too much time with the tractor yet (about 5 months), so far I really like the tractor. I like the build quality because it is all metal, no fiberglass fenders or hood. Compared to current day tractors it is fairly basic in terms of features. Mine doesn't have power steering, no synchromesh, or shuttle shift. But if those are not too important to you when considering what tractor to buy then I would recommend it. I didn't buy from the dealer and haven't needed many new parts yet (knock on wood), but in the past dealings with Deere dealers I have always had a good experience.

Pros: Compact size, good for out in the woods, but with plenty of power.
Cons: Spartan on features when compared to most current day models.

When I bought this tractor it also included in the deal an Allied Front-end Loader and a Woods 3 point hitch Backhoe. I've used the tractor and attachments over the years to clear small trees, fence row brush, dig up stumps and level the ground. We seeded the new soil and are now mowing this portion of the property. By clearing this section of our property it increased the land value and looks much better.

Pros: None.
Cons: None.

Great Little Tractor
Model Year: 1986

Just bought this tractor used a few months ago and so far it is great. Since it is new to me I cannot speak to the reliability of it long term, but so far it has been great! While I didn't buy from a dealer, I have gotten some parts from the local dealer and they have been great every time! One thing I have noticed is that at times it can be hard to shift in and out of gear but I am used to that so it isn't a big deal to me, but it might be to others. Another slight issue is not having power steering. It was an option on this year of tractor but in this case it was not added on when it was purchased. Not having power steering is only noticeable when you are not moving and you try to turn the wheels, otherwise it is fine. Overall it seems like a great tractor and I look forward to getting years of use out of it!

Pros: Compact size but powerful, no fiberglass body panels.
Cons: Occasional difficulty shifting, no power steering.

Hey all, I'd been looking for a tractor on Craigslist for months when I saw this one for sale down the street from my house. This 950 is about as close as a 22 year old machine gets to "like new" condition. It came with a 6' belly mower and a Woods D80 Brush hog, which worked perfectly to cut the 4 acres behind my house. Seeing as I was paying $500.00 every time I had it cut, the $3500.00 was a darn good investment. I changed all the fluids and filters as it came without records, but that was less than $150.00 and now I know it's all good to go. I still have to find a way to cut the stuff along the stone walls. Everyone who's cut the field has been pinching in over the last 20 years and there's places I was 30' away and the trees are growing. I'm looking for either a FEL or Backhoe to help clear away that gnarly mess.

Pros: Perfect size for my property and has plenty of power.
Cons: I'll let ya know.
